Be it known that I, \VILLETT M. RAYNOR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Loose- Leaf Binder, of which the following is a. full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to in'iprovements in loose leaf binders, such as used for bookkeeping purposes, and which are usually in ledger form, but so far as my invention is concerned, the leaves may be for any purpose whatever. This loose leal" construction is being quite generally adopted and an objection to most of them is that the adjusting rods which regulate the thickness of the book and support the perforated leaves project through the book and are likely to scratch the desk on which the book lies; moreover, they render the book awkward to manage.

The object oi my invention is to obviate this difficulty and produce a simple and inexpensive structure which is adopted to carry the loose leaves either in small or large quantities, and which has adjustable posts ad apted to carry the leaves and contained wholly within the binding clips and covers of the book.

With these ends in view, my invention consists of certain features of constructit '1 and combination of parts which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part o'l' this specification, in which similar letters and 'ligures o'l reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a broken end view of a book showing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan View of one of the binding clips. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the clip shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4

10 and 11 can be of any usual construction and as shown the clip 10 is in cross section of a general U shape, the 0 en edge being on the inner side and the The two parts of the clip 10 are connected near the ends of the clip by split posts 12 and a locking spring 13 is arranged between posts and bears against them, which locking spring is adjusted by a screw 1 1 journaled in the clip and engaging the spring 13. By tightening the screw the posts 12 are forced against the inner posts 15 and 16 to be presently referred to, and the opposed clips may be fastened in relation to each other.

The leaf posts comprise the parts 15 and 16, the post 15 being fixed to the plate 11 and having threaded and socketed upper ends which receive the reduced and threaded parts 16 of the post sections 16. These in turn may be socketed as shown so that the posts can be extended to any necessary length. The upper ends ol the post, or at least, the ends opposite the part 15 (they may be either upper or lower, for that matter) enter the split posts 12, as above stated. The split posts merely guide the parts 16 which can be built up to any necessary extent.

The book is provided with any usual form of cover, as, for instance, the kind shown in Fig. 1, where the

10 and 11, the material of the cover being wrapped around and pasted, or otherwise l'astened to the clips. This, however, is not essential, and any suitable cover can be used without a'll'ecting the principle of my invention.

It will be seen that the structure which I have shown provides a book which is perfectly smooth on both sides, and which can lie flat upon the desk without injuring the latter, and that the structure can be built up easily, and the built up leaf holding posts 15 and 16 extended to any necessary length, so as to term a book of any thickness.

Having thus 'l'ull y described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. A structure such as described comprising opposed cover clips, split posts carried by one of the clips sectional posts connecting the clips, certain of said posts engaging the split posts and resilient means for forcing the split posts in engagement with; the second named posts.

2. A structure such as described comprising opposed cover clips, split posts carried by one of the clips, sectional posts connecting the clips, certain of said posts engaging the split posts and a spring for forcing the '"split'posts in engagement with the second named posts.

3. A structure such as described comprising opposed cover clips, split posts carried by one of the clips sectional posts connecting the clips, certain of said posts engaging the split posts, a spring for forcing the split posts WILLETT M. RAYNOR.
