SPECIFICATION forming part of' Letters Patent No. 794,075, dated July 1, 1905.
Application filed October 26, 1904. Serial No. 230,059.
.7b (All, 11171/0711, /l/V 'mln/y cm1/cern:
lie it known that l, ltussnLL l). BaANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgeville, in the county of Randolph, State of lndiana, have invented certain new and useful .improvements in Books; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
llhis invention relates to books, and more particularly to the binding thereof, and has for its object to provide a book so arranged that the binding' may be removed from the leaves and attached to other leaves when desired, it being understood that the invention is especially adapted for blank-books, in which the leaves are useless after being lilled.
@ther objects and advantages will be apparent from the followingdescription, and it will be understood that modifications of the speciiic construction shown may be made and any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the drawings forming a portion of this speciiication, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a modification in which the screws are inserted from the outside of the covers. Fig. et is a perspective view showing a modified form in which the movable plates are hing'ed. Fig. 5 is adetail sectional view of the plates. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the plates shown in Fig. 4t.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shownabook comprising a plurality of leaves 5, secured together in the usual manner and having fastened to their rearward edges a strip of strong fabric 6, which extends 'be' youd the outer leaves, as shown.
i `he binding of the book consists of the usual back 8, to which the covers 9 and 10 are secured at their rearward edges, and in the present invention the covers are provided with recesses 11 in their inner faces at their rearward edges., and extending from end to end thereof and disposed in these recesses are metallic plates 1Q, which in thickness are equal to substantially half the depth of the recesses, and these plates l2 are provided with longitudinal grooves 13 for a purpose to be presently described. The plates 12 are secured to the covers by means of iiat-headed screws la, and each plate is provided with a longitudinally -arranged series of threaded perfor-ations 15. When in use, the leaves 5 are disposed in the binding in the usual manner, and the free edge portions of the fabric 6 are disposed upon the plates 12, the fabrics having' Openings 16 therethrough, which aline with the perforations 15, and disposed upon the fabrics are metallic plates 17, which are secured in position by means of flat-headed machine-screws 18, which are passed through perfor-ations 19 therein and have their lower ends engaged in the perforations 15. The plates 17 are provided with longitudinal ribs 20, which register with the grooves 13 and force the fabric 6 thereinto when the screws are tightened, thus preventing loosening of the leaves, and when the plates 17 are in position they lie lflush with the inner faces of the covers 9 and 10. As will be readily understood, the plates 17 may be removed to permit of the removal of the leaves 5 and the substitution of other leaves therefor. lt will thus be seen that a binding is provided which not only possesses the feature of being removable, but forms a heavy and substantial binding which is extremely simple and which may be manufactured at a low cost.
In Fig. 3 the covers are provided with the plates 12, which, as described, lie j ust beneath the outer surfaces of the covers. In this form the covers are provided with openings A, which aline with the perforations of the plates, these perforations in the present instance being unthreaded. The plates 17 have their perforations provided with threads, and the screws 18 are inserted from the outer faces of the covers.
In Fig. i there is shown a construction in which the plates 17 are hinged to the plates 12, as shown at B, and in this case bolts C are engaged in the openings of the plates 12 and project beyond the inner faces thereof for engagement in the openings of the plates 17 IOO when these plates are moved to lie against the ward edges, plates secured in the recesses, 25
plates l2. The fabric 6 of the leaves is engaged between the plates, the plates being' held with the fabric clamped therebetween b y means of nuts D, which are engaged with the bolts C.
It will of course be understoood that the plates in the modified forms may be provided with cooperating projections and depressions, as in the first-described form.
Vhat is claimed is l. In a book, the combination with leaves provided with tabs, of a binding therefor, said binding comprising covers and a connectingbacl, said covers having recesses in their inner faces at their'rearward edges, plates secured in the recesses, other plates disposed against the lirst-named plates, and attaching' devices engaged in the two plates to hold them together, the tabs of the leaves being disposed between the plates of each pair.
2. A boohv comprising' a binding including covers and a connecting-back,said covers having recesses in their inner faces at their rearother plates disposed in the recesses and removably attached to the first-named plates and a plurality of leaves disposed between the covers and having tabs removably secured between the plates of each pair.
3. A book comprising a binding including two covers and a connecting-back, said covers having' recesses therein at their rearward edges, plates secured in the recesses and having depressions therein, other plates disposed within the recesses and detachably secured to the iirst-named plates, and having projections thereon engaging the depressions of the tirstnamed plates, and a plurality of leaves disposed between the covers and having tabs engaged between the plates.
ln testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL P. BRANSON.
