Description
THOMAS EDMUND'IS.
Plow Share@ Patented August` 15, 1871.
THOMAS EDMUNDS, OF TALOOTT, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,119, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ',lHoMAs EDMUNDs, of Talcott, in the county of Charlotte and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plowshares; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a plowshare and removable plowpoint, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the share and point. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the point alone. Fig. 3 is a side View ofthe share and point, and Fig. 4 is a view of the front end of the share.
A represents the share, and B the point for a plow. The share A is at its front end provided with a dovetailed guide or box, a, in which the stem or shank O of the point B is inserted. The joint .fr between the share and point is inclined,
as shown in Fig. 3, thereby forming a perfect bearing for the point, relieving the strain upon the shank G and the guide a.. Furthermore, the point B is cast with `an enlargement, b, upon its upper surface, extending nearly to the outer end of the shank C. This enlargement or rib b is sloping on both sides toward the guide or looxl a, whereby the edges of the same are protected from wear. At the same time, this rib gives addi tional strength to the point just where it is most needed.
I am aware that a plow-point provided with a stem or shank, and inserted in the end of a plowshare, has been used before, and I do therefore not claim such as my invention; but
Vhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the share A with guide or box a, and the point B with shank O and rib b, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of June, 1871.
THOMAS EDMUNDS.
Illitnesses M. F. TUTWILER, PAUL F. BROWN.
