Description

N. C. EDWARDS.
GARMENT FASTENER- APPLICATION FILED mmze, 1910.
1,1 @Ufi@% Patented Apr. 25, 1916.
NORA C. EDWARDS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
Application filed January 26, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORA C. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a garment fastener of that type having one or more retain ing arms or tongues which are adapted to enter a pocket arranged on the garment and thus permit of attaching the fastener to or removing the same from the garment without necessitating any sewing for this purose. p The object of this invention is to provide means for preventing the retaining arm or arms from being deflected laterally relatively to the body of the fastener and avoiding unsightly appearance of the garment when no belt is used in connection with the same.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a skirt supporter viewed from the inner side and embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same viewed from the outer side and applied to a garment. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing a skirt supporter embodying my invention applied to a skirt and waist. Fig. 4: is a detached perspective view showing a form of skirt supporter having a single retaining arm or tongue and provided with my improvements.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The skirt supporter embodying my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 comprises a body having a horizontal upper bar H, which is adapted to receive on its upper edge the hooks h, h attached to a skirt I. At opposite ends of the horizontal bar the same has heads J, J each of which is provided with vertical slots 3', j which receive a waist belt K. L, L represent two horizontal retaining arms or tongues which are arranged in line with each other and parallel with the bar H below the latter and which project toward each other from the heads J, J. The inner opposing ends of the attaching arms are adapted to be removably inserted in opposite ends of a horizontal pocket Z which is secured by sewing or otherwise to the waste M of the garment. The inner ends of the arms L are free to move inwardly relatively to the body of the fastener but Specification of Letters Patent.

prevented from springing or deflecting outwardly relatively to the same as the fastener is bent around the waist of the wearer. The preferred means for this purpose consists of a stop or guard N which projects downwardly from the central part of the bar H and against which the outer side of the inner or free ends of the arms L bear while confined in the pocket Z. By this means the retaining arms are compelled to lie close to the waist of the wearer and conform to its shape, thereby improving the appearance of the garment. By employing the stop N the arms are prevented from springing or deflecting outwardly relatively to the bar H and the body of the person without the aid of the belt K which has heretofore been relied on to perform this function.
In the construction of skirt support shown in Fig. 4 but one retaining arm 0 is employed which arm is connected at one end with the head J of the upper bar II and terminates at its free end near the other head J 2 of this bar, as shown in Fig. 4. In this modified form of skirt supporter the free end of the arm 0 is preferably held against outward displacement relatively to the upper or main bar when the skirt supporter is in use by means of a stop 0 arranged on the free end of the arm 0 and engaging with the inner side of the adjacent head J of the bar H.
As shown in the drawings, the cross bars, side bars, arms and stops of the garment fastener are constructed of sheet metal, but if desired the same may be constructed of other suitable material.
By employing the stops or guards N, p the belt K may be dispensed with in order to reduce the girth of the person wearing the garment fastener. When the belt is omitted the guards N, 79 form the sole means of preventing the free ends of the attaching arms L, o from springing outwardly when the garment fastener is placed about the waist of the wearer.
I claim as my invention:
1. A skirt supporter comprising an upper elongated supporting member or body adapted to be engaged on its upper edge by hooks on one part of a garment, an elongated attaching member or arm arranged below said body and having its upper longitudinal edge arranged adjacent to but separated by an intervening longitudinal slot from the lower longitudinal edge of said body, said Patented am. as, ram.
adapted to beconnected arm being adapted to enter a pocket on an other part of the garment and connected at one of its ends with the corresponding end of said body while the opposite corresponding ends of said body and arm are disconnected, and said slot being adapted to receive one longitudinal side of said pocket, and cooperating parts arranged on the free end of said arm and the adjacent part of said body and constructed to normally permit the free end of said arm to move inwardly relatively to said body but hold the same against outward movement relatively thereto.
2. A skirt supporter comprising a body with a skirt, a pair of attaching arms arranged parallel with said body and connected at their outer ends with the outer ends of the body while their inner ends are free and opposite each other and adapted to be inserted in apocket on a Witness my hand this 25th day of Janu- I ary 1910.
