PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM A. WRIGHT, OF NEW YORK, N. X.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER FOR MEN.
SPECIFICATION forming 'part of Letters Patent No. 756,764, dated April 5, 1904 Application filed September 25,1903. Barium-174,574. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of NewYork, borough of Manhattan, in the countyand State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Garment-Supporter for Men, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and economic form of garmerit-supporter especially adapted for use in connection with trousers and so constructed that it will include a button or stud to receive a Suspender-end, a member for support: ing engagement with a pair of trousers, a member, if so desired, adapted to prevent the upward movement of a belt, and a member whereby to apply the device to the inner face of the waistband of a pair of drawers.
Afurther purpose of the invention is to provide a device of the characterdescribed capable of convenient and expeditious application or removal and which when applied will be.
practically invisible atthe outer face of the garment.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as
willbe hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed 'out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification,
in which similar charactersof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an inside perspective'view of a portion of the waistband of a pair of trousers and a pair of drawers and a perspective view of the supporter applied to the trousers and in supporting engagement with the drawers. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through those portions of the trousers and drawers shown in Fig. 1 and through the suspender-end,together with a longitudinal central sectionthrough the supporter, taken practically on the line 2 2, of Fig. f3. Fig. 3 is a -rear elevation of the supporter. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section through a supporter in which the supporting member for the drawers and the attaching member are integral, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the supporter constructed without the guard member for a belt.
A represents the waistband of a pair of trousers, and B the waistband of a pair of drawers provided with the usual tapes 10, adapted ordinarily to receive the suspender-ends C. The device D consists of a body-section 11, which may be made straight or curved, as desired; a bottom hook 12, which extends upwardly at the inner face of the body; a button 13, which is located between the. ends of the body and above the lower hook 12, being likewise at the inner face of the body, and an upper hook 11, adapted to extend over the upper edge of the waistband of a pair of trousers and to receive at its upper portion a belt E for the purpose of preventing the said belt from riding upward over the upper edge of the waistband of the trousers; but the upper hook 14,- adapted for use in connection with a belt E,may be omitted, as is shown in Fig. 5.
At each side edge of the'body 11, adjacent to the button 13, laterally-extending lugs 15 are formed, as is best shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and at the lower portion of each lug 15 a keeper 16 is located, extending outwardly at right angles from the said body, as is also shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Eyes 17 are formed on offsets from the side edges of the body, the
said eyes being at the'front face of the body and just above the main portion of the lower hook 12, or where the said lower book 12 con- These eyes are adaptnects with the bodyll. ed to receive the lower member 18 of a substantially U shaped attaching member F, made, preferably, of a wire of suitable gage, and the limbs 19 of the said attaching member F are pointed at their free ends, and these pointed ends of the attaching member are adapted for engagement with the keepers 16.
The device is applied as shown in Fig. 1, the
limbs 19 of the attaching memberF- being passed through thewaistband A of .the trousers, but not sufiiciently forward to expose the said limbs at .the front of'the said waistband. After the attaching member has been so applied to the waistband A of the trousers the pointed ends of the limbs of the said attachingmember are brought to an engagement with the keepers 16, thusholding the device rigidlyiin place and in such position that a loop on the waistband B of the drawers can be carried over and supported by the lower hook 12, while the upper hook 14, extending in an opposite direction to the lower hook 12, will be located over the upper edge of the Waistband of the trousers and in position to receive the upper portion of a belt E, and the button 13 of the device will receive the lower portion of a Suspender-end C, as is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and by positive lines in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a slight modification in the construction of the device (designated in its entirety as D) wherein the attaching member, which is designated as F,
a (designated as 121) and these two members are I is integral with the lower hook of the device,
constructed of a wire of suitable gage. Where the members connect, 'coils or eyes 20 are formed, through which'eoils or eyes projections 21 extend from the side edges of the body 11; otherwise the device is of the same construction as has been described; but the upper hook is designated as 1 1, the button as 13", and the keepers as '16.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a further departure in the construction of the device (designated inits entirety as D wherein the device is constructed the same as is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, with the exception that the upper hook 14 is omitted and at the upper portion of the body 1'1 an opening 22 is formed above the button 13", which opening may be .utilized to receive the bar of a watch-chain,
for example, when a belt is not worn; The lower hookin this form of the device is designated-as l2", theattaching member asF, its component parts 18 and 19, the knuckle for the attaching member being designatedas 17 and the keepers for the attaching member Having thus described my invention, g
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved articlejof manufacture, a garmentrsupporter, comprising a body-plate provided with means for attachment to a garment, a SUSPBIlClGIrbUlJtOH fixed to the bodyplate and having its axis extending horizontally therefrom beyond one face, and a hook at the lower end of the body-plate, which extends upward indirection of the button and at the same side of the bod plate, as'dc scribed.
2. A garment-supporter,consisting of a body member, a lower supporting member, consisting of a hook extending upward at the inner face of the body member, a button located at the inner face of the body member between its ends, keepers carried by the said body member at its front, and an attaching member pivoted to the forward portion of the body member of the supporter an'dhdapted in looking position to engage with. the aforesaid keepers, as described.
3. A garment supporter, consistingof a body member,'alower supporting member consisting of a hook extending upwardly at the inner face of the body member, a guard member located at the upper endof the body member, which guard member is in the form of a hook extending downwardly at the front f'aceof the body member, a button located at the inner face of the body member between "its ends, keepers carried by the said body member at its front, and an attaching member pivoted to the forward portion of the body 7 member of the supporter and adapted in looking position to engage with the aforesaid keepers, as described Intestimony whereof- I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing'lwitnesses.
