\ UNITED-STATES PATENT orrron.
TAYLOR K. SURFACE, OF MERINA, NEBRASKA.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, TAYLOR K. SURFAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merna, in the county of Custer and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Pencil-Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an, improved double pencil holder, and an object of the invention is to provide a holder of this design comprising a body, from the sides of which curved arms project, each of which being adapted to overlie a pencil in combination with two yieldable clamps rising from one face of the body, and opposite each other and interposed between the two pencils, one bearing against each pencil to hold the same in its respective arm.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved clamp on the back of the body extending downwardly, and designed to clamp the outer portion of the pocket between the clamp and the body, to secure the holder to wearing apparel.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an extension on the clamp of the back of the body, which extension underlies the body causing a crimp or a partial fold in the material of the wearing apparel, to prevent slipping of the holder.
A feature of the invention is the provision of an elongated lug, which is struck up from the lower edge of the body in the direction of the clamp on the back of the body to additionally insure against displacement of the holder.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved holder constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, showing the holder clamped to the material of the pocket of the wearing apparel. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another form Specification of Letters Patent.

of holder. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 77 of Fig. 6, showing another construction of clamp on the back of the holder. Fig. 8
is a view in rear elevation of the form of I pencils may be arranged. A strip of metal 6 is provided, which is bent upon itself as at 7 forming two spring arms 8 and 9, and the corresponding edges of these arms nearest the bends 7 are soldered or otherwise connected to the front face of the body, as shown at 10. The lower portions of the arms below where they are soldered to the body are bowed or curved laterally toward the pencils. It will be observed that the spring arms or clamps are between the pencils and are designed to bear against the pencils to hold them in place in the curved arms. Soldered or otherwise secured at 11 on the back of the body is a spring clamp 12, the lower portion of which extends downwardly and is bowed slightly rearwardly from the back of the body, so that the material of the wearing apparel may enter between the clamp and the body. The lower extreme portion 13 of the clamp partially underlies the lower edge of the body and forwardly and downwardly toward the material of the pocket, so that when the material is between the clamp and the body a slight crimp is caused in the material between the pencils. In other words the material of the pocket is pushed or crimped under the lower edge of the body, there being an elongated lug or rib struck up from the lower edge of the body, which rib 14 bites into the material of the pocket, constituting additional means for assisting the underlying extreme portion of the spring clamp or tongue in preventing displacement of the holder. In Figs. 6 and 7 the underlying extreme portion of the spring clamp or tongue on the back of the body of the holder, and the elongated rib or lug are dispensed with.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A pencil holder comprising a plate, the opposite edge portions of which are provided with curved arms overlying th p ate and extending toward each other and designed to receive a pair of pencils between the arms and the plate, said plate having a pair of spring clamps soldered to its front face, said spring clamps being interposed between the pencil receiving portions and designed to bear laterally and against the pencils to hold the pencils in said curved arms, a clamp secured to the top portion of the back of the plate and extending downwardly and having its extreme portion underlying the lower edge of the plate to cause a crimp in the material of the pocket of the wearer between said pencils, and an elongated rib formed upon the lower edge of the plate designed to bite in the material of the pocket to prevent displacement of the holder.
2. A pencil holder comprising a plate, the lower opposite edge portions of which are provided with curved arms overlying the plate and extending toward each other and designed to receive a pair of pencils, one between each arm and the plate, a pair of spring clamps constructed from a single piece of spring material bent upon itself to form a pair of spring clamps interposed be tween the pencil receiving portions and designed to bear laterally and against the pencils to hold them in said curved arms,
said pair of spring clamps adjacent where the single piece of material is bent upon itself being secured to said plate, a clamping blade secured to the top portion of the back of the plate and extending downwardly and having its extreme portion underlying the lower edge of the plate to cause a crimp in the material of the pocket of the wearing apparel and to force the crimped material between said pencils, to prevent the holder from wabbling, the lower edge of the plate having an elongated rib extending trans versely thereof and designed to bite in the material of the pocket to prevent displacement of the holder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
