Specification of Letters `Patent. I
Patented Oct. 30, 1906.
Application filed February 20, 1906. Serial No. 302.081.
i .To all whom t may concern:
- knowledgeof thev details of construction ofl z Beit known that I, NATHANIEL T. B11N-v FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the countyof Westmoreland'and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Scratchers, of which the following is -a specification.
The object of this'invention is to provide an improved match-scratching device which is adapted to be readily attached in any desired position,to an article of ap arel.
The invention also contemp ates the formation of the device out of a single piece of sheet material which is peculiarly shaped so as to be very cheapl and economically manufactured and so that the scratchingsurface can be readily replaced when necessary. f To this end the match-scratcher comprises, essentially, a plate formed with a tongue nd a scratching-surface litting under the opening made in the formation of the tong fe and having an interlocking connection wth the tongue.
For a'full description of the invention and the merits' thereof and. also to acquireV a the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in Which- Flgure 1 isa perspective view of' the imroved match-scratching device. Fig. 2`is a lengitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a rear view, and Figa/4 is a transverse sectional view showing a modiiication.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in allthe viewsV of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The body of the device comprises a plate l, which maybe formed of any suitable sheet material and which isillustrated as being approximately rectangular in shape. This plate 1 is formed Withfaxtongue 2, which is prefer-- iably centrallyildcated and which is provided with anofl'set portion 3, which causes the tongue to lie in a vplane parallel to and slightly s aced from the plate l. The tongue 2 is shown aswformedlby two longitudinal cuts, which are parallel to the sides ofthe plate 1, and by a transverse cut-at one end of the plate, *the offset portion 3 being located at the opposite 'enfof the plate. The mateliscratching surface 4, which ispreferably in the form of a piece of sandpaper, is approxi tongue 2, so as to be exposed t mately the shape of the plate-1 and is adapted to fit between the said plate and the made in the formation ofthe tongue 2. One
roughthe cut end of the scratching-s uiace 4 is formed with a notch 5, which engages with the offsetportion 3 and prevents any lateral displacement' of the scratching-surface.
The op osite end of thescratching-surface is engage and held in position against longitudinal dis lacement by means of a projection from the plp as the pin 6, whichinay also be employed to secure the device in position lupon an article of apparel. This pin passes through the plate 1 and may either be employed in the;
ate 1 ,such
usual manner or in connection with aneye 7 at the opposite end of the plate 1, as shown in Fig. 2. It may also be foundesirablaas shown in Fig. 4, to bend the' si es ofthe plate 1 slightly tothe rear, as shown at 8, Aso as to engage with the edges of the scratching-surface 4- and form an additional safeguard against any lateral displacement of the same. It will thus be seen that the scratching-surface is held against lateral movement b means of the interlocking connection with the offset portion 3 and that the p in 6 secures it against longitudinal displacement. In o1"- der to remove the scratchingsurface, it is simply necessary to disengage it Jfrom` connection with the pin 6 and then slide it longitudinally away from the oflset portion 3. In this manner it will be seen that owing to the peculiar construction of the device the scratchingsuriace can be readily removed or replaced lwithout the necessity of bending any portionsof the metal, as is the case with` most of the devices which have hitherto been employed.
Having thus described the invention, what 1s claimed as new isl l. A inatchscratching'device comprising IOO IOS
plate and the tongue so as to loe exposed through the opening made in the formation ofthe tongue, one edge ofthe scratchingsun face being rovided With a notch which has an interloc ring connection with the tongueand holds the scratching-surface against lat eral dis lacement, and a projection from the late which engages With the scratching-sun ace and holds 'the same against longitudinal displacement. y
3. A match-scratching device com rising a plate having a tongue formed t erein, means at one end of the plate for securing it to a support, and a scratching-surface.tting under the opening made in the formation of the tongue, one edge of the scratching-surface being formed With a notch which en gages with the tongue, while the opposite edge engages with the before-mentioned securing means for the late.
e. A match-scratciiingdevice comprising a plate having opposite edges thereof turned backwardly, a tongue formed in the plate and extending approximately parallel to thjeJ backWardly-turned edges, means at one end of the late for securing it to a sup ort, and a serate ing-surface fitting under ,tiie opening made in the formation of the tongue, said scratchingsurfaee having an interlocking connection With the tongue and engaging with the rearwardly-turned edges of the plate to prevent lateral displacement and also engaging with the before-mentioned securing means for the plate to prevent longitudinal displacement.
5. A match-scratching device comprising a plate having a tongue cut therein, a pin at one end of the plate for securing it to a support, and a scratching-surface fitting under the opening made lin theformationof the tongue, one end of the scratching-surface being formed with a notch which has an interlocking "connection with the tongue to prevent lateral displacement, While the opposite end of the scratching-surface is engaged by the beore-mentioned pin to prevent longitudinal displacement. l
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence oi' tWo witnesses.
