Description
JOHN r. sivrInJA, or RoYALromMrNNnsorA. rr Y nAivi-r'.-CONNECTOR f VApplication filed May 19, 1914. Serial No. 839,558.
vTo all wlw-m t may concern .Be it known that I, JOHN F. SMIEJA, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Roya-lton, in the county `of Morrison and State of Minnesota, have invented new and' useful Improvements in H ameonnectors, of which the following isa specification.
The invention provides a buckle intended chiefly for harness but which maybe advantageously used in connection with straps` for any purpose where adjustment 1 s required without necessitating the formation of a plurality of openings in the strap which necessarily weakens the strap and limits the adjustment because of the fixed position of the openings arranged to receive the tongue,
stud or like engaging part of buckles generally.
The present invention provides a buckle whichis free from a tongue, stud or like part andwhich admits of a nicety of yadjustment of the strap which may be moved to any position and made secure, such strap being free from openings and not susceptible to being marredin any Vof its adjusted positions.
The invention consists of a buckle embodying two members which are pivotally connected, one of such members acting in the capacity of a lever to admit of tightening the strap when force is required to draw the same in order to secure the desired result.` Y Y The invention consists of the novelfeatures, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter' will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached z-Figure 1 is aV perspective view of a buckle embodying the invention, showing` the membersv closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the buckle inverted showing the members. open.
Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of` the buckle. Y
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters. Y
The buckle comprises essentially two members A and B, the member Abeingthe main portion and the member B the lever. These two members are pivotally connected at 1,'the arrangement being such as to admit of the lever B closing upon the member A, each of such members havinghooks 2 and specification of Letters Patent. patented A 3 at their free ends whichpare` adapted to engage by a springer snap action so as to? hold they member B closed upon the memberA.
The members may be formed in any manner but arepreferably constructed of metall.
blanks struck up injtheform substantially as shown.- l' @y Y frThe ,member` A vcomprises a plate '4 and Vside flanges 5, the latter serving to stil'en the member andto inclose a space to receive the member B when the same is closed.` The hook' 2 is formed at one end of the plate 4 and near .such end is formed a pluralityV of transverse slots 6,7, andSthrough which an 'end ofthe strap 9 is rove. Other slots 10 and 11 areformed transversely in the opposite end portion of the plate 4 and the strap 9 'is passed therethrough from one side of the plate to the other. The side flanges 5 are widened near the end receiving the pivot fastening 1. The strap 9 passes through the slot 10 to the under side of the plate 4, thence back through the slot 11 and over the plate 4, thence through the slot7 back through the slot 6,thence through a loop'of a hook 12 or like part and again back through the slot 6 to the under side of the lplate and out through the slot 7 and again through the slot 8. Such arrangement insures a fastening of the loose end of the strapv and a retension of the hook or like part V12 in the loop formed by that part of the strap passing through the slot 6.
The lever member B comprises side bars 13 andra plate 14 at the outer or free ends Y of the side bars '13, such plate projecting beyond the extremities of the side bars and terminating in the hookl 3. Slots 15 and 16 are formed transversely of the plate 14 near.
the inner endl thereof and receive an end portion of the strap9 which passes through the slot 16 to the inner side of the plate, thence back through the slot 15.
The strap may be lengthened or shortened by adjusting either. of its ends with reference to the member with whichA it coper' ates, such radjustment being easily effected because of theabsence of projecting parts such as tongues, studs vor the like to be engaged or disengaged.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and While I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device Which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made vvhen desired as are Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is A hame connector comprising a main member consisting of a plate and vSide flanges, said plate having a hook at one end and a plurality of transverse slots arranged in adjacent relation to the opposite ends thereof, and a second member comprising spaced side bars and a plate near the outer ends of the side bars and serving as connecting means therefor and having a series of slots, said second member being pivotally connected to the side flanges of the mam member', the plate of the second member projecting beyond the extremities of its side bars and terminating in a hook to engage the hook of the main member, a strap, having one end thereof passed through the slots of the plate o-f the second member, thence through the slots of the main member at one end thereof, thence extended over the top of said last mentioned member in a direction toward the hook end thereof, thence through the other slots of said last mentioned member, thence back through the last mentioned slots forming a loop in Said strap, and haine connecting means engaged with the loop portion of said strap.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
` JOI-IN F. SMIEJA.
