Description

F. A. SCHLUETER.
TOY.. v APPLICATION `FILED IuLYIII, I9I5.,
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
UNITED STATES` PATENT oEEIcE.
FREDERICK A. SCHLUETER, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOY.
Application filed July 10, 1915.
To all/whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. SCHLTIE- TER, a citizen of the United States, residmg at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is: a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n toys and particularly to projectiles and means for throwing same, and hasfor its object to provide a simple and inexpensive toy of the character described constructed of few parts, effective in. operation, and durable in use. 4
Further this invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts described in the specification and set forth in the claims.
In .the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a side view showing a projectile and the projecting means of this invention associated together in the hands of an operator preparatory to throwing the projectile; Fig. 2 is a side View showing the projectile of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 3 is a side View showing the projecting means of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale.
A shaft 1 may be provided with a head 2 borne by one end of said shaft to forma projectile embodying the present invention,
which projectile may be a dart as shown in theA drawings and may be constructed of any suitable material, such, for instance, as wood. A lateral projection 3 may be provided borne by shaft 1 at any suitable distance rearwardly of head 2. Said projection 3 may consist of a peg, pin, brad or the like having one end inserted into shaft l and having its other end extending laterally away from said shaft, as shown in the drawings, said projection being adapted releasably to engage the loop 4 of a flexible mem ber 5 secured to one end of a Wand or rod 6 by means of a tack`7 or the like. Flexible member 5 maybe a cord looped upon itself as best seen-in Fig. 3, and may be of any suitable length convenient for the operator of the device, the free looped portion 4 of said flexible member being adapted to be Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Serial No. 39,068.
associated removably in engagement with projection 3borne by shaft 1 as shown in Fig. l. Rod 6 may be of any suitable length and may be constructed of any suitable material, such, for instance, as wood,.and may be stiff or rigid.
In `operating the device embodying the present invention, the operator, having en'- gaged projection 3 in looped portion 4 of flexible member 5, may seize the rearward end-portion of shaft 1 in one hand and the free end of rod 6 in the other hand and having drawn flexible member 5 taut by pulling in opposite directions with his hands, he may swing rod 6 forwardly substantially on the dot and dash arc 8,'Fig. 1, releasing his hold upon shaft 1, whereupon the projectile will be propelled with considerable force through the air, projection 3 becoming disengaged from looped portion 4 after shaft 1 has been released from the hand of the operator.
In practice it has been found that by means of a device embodying the presentinvention a projectile, such as the dart shown in the drawings, may be thrown to a very great height and distance. y i
Many changes in -the arrangement and combinationpof parts may be made Without departing from the nature and spirit of the present invention.
I claim:
1. A toy comprising a projecting device consisting of a stiff' rod, a non-elastic flexible member looped upon itself and attached to one end of said rod, a shaft, and means borne by said-shaft intermediate its ends adapted releasably to engage the loop of said flexible member.
2. A toy comprising a projecting device consisting ofarigid rod, a non-elastic flexible member forming an endless loop having one portion secured to an end of said rod and having a free looped-portion extending away from said rod, and a shaft having a head and means borne rearwardly of said head, said means being adapted releasably to' engage said free looped-portion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
FREDERICK A'. SCHLUETER.
