Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 2%, 1915.
Application filed September 3, 1914. l Serial No. 860,064. I
T all whom it may) concern Be it known that I, FRANK S. PIEBSON, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aerial Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to aerial projectiles and more particularly to'a toy aeroplane adapted to be launched from the hand of the operator and propelled through the air.
The object of my invention is to provide a toy of this class which will be simple in construction, durable, strong and cheap to manufacture, and one which is both instructive and amusing in its use.
With the above and other objects in view my invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy aeroplane embodying the preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Similar reference characters indicate simil lar parts throughout the various views of the drawings.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which the preferred form of my invention is illustrated, I provide a toy aeroplane comprising an elongated body portion 1, said body portion 1 converging toward its rear end, and provided at that point with vertical blades 2 and 3, extending above and below the surface of the same.
forward end with laterally extending members comprising planes 4 and 5, and the portion 6 of the body portion. 1 extends in front of the planes 4 and 5 to provide a prow for the device and for facilitating its travel toward the, body 1 from apoint substan- Thesaid body portion 1 is provided adjacent thev tially intermediate its length to its forward able material may be employed which is both light, strong and durable.
In order to launch and propel this device through the air I provide an elastic element,
in the present instance comprising a rubher band 10, said rubber band 10 being fastened at 11 to the prow (3 of the device. hen it is desired to launch this device into the air and propel the same, the rubber band is engaged over one finger of one of the hands of the operator, the other hand grasping the rudder or guides 2. Drawing back the device against the tension of the rubber band 10 and releasing the same will cause the device to be launched into the air and propelled therethrough. It is preferable that the rubber band which is utilized for the purpose of propelling the device be secured thereto and be of the smallest possible size so as .to'not interfere with the gliding of the device through the air.
From the above it isthought that a clear and con'iprehensive understanding of my in vention and its advantages may be had, and a understood that changes may be made in the detail structure thereof which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the appended claims. p
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is':-
1. A toy of the class described, including a fiat tapered body having the forward end;
thereof formed into a prow, planes integrally formed therewith and extendinglaterally thereto, said planes being adjacent, to and positioned rearwardly of @fiid' prow, means associated withthe prow to initially impart movement to the device, and a guiding and strengthening rib on the under face and extending throughout the length thereof.
2. In a toy of the class described, comprising a fiat body portion, planes formed therewith and extending laterally therefrom, said planes being positioned adjacent the forward end of the body, direction controlling means disposed on the under face of the body portion and extending throughout the length of the same, a prow formed on the forward end of the body, and means carried by the forward end of the device for launching the same through the air.
3. In a toy of the class described, a body portion comprising a fiat tapering sheet of cardboard or the like, planes integrally formed'therewith and extending laterally therefrom, means for guiding the device during flight comprising a longitudinally disposed rib upon the under surface of the ea-em ing an elastic band carried by the forward end of the device whereby screeching 0* the elastic band and releasing the body 01 the device will propel the same ehrough ehekair;
4. As an article of manufacture, a toxincluding a, fiat tapering bodyliaving bale-no- Ling planes formed integrally therewith and extending laterally thereto adjacent the forward end, a guiding and strengthening rib carried by the under face of said body, and an elastic element carried by the forward end of said body to initially impart movement to the same.-
in testimonywhereof I ailix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
