This invention relates to box lid fasteners,

and has particular application to a device of this class adaptedespecially for use in securing, in closed position, the lid or cover of a small box such as may be used for packaging cigars, cigarettes and other articles.

In the present instance it is my purpose to provide a box lid fastener which is held in position on th cover or lid of the box by frictionally engaging therewith, as contradistinguished from being rigidly fastened thereto, through the agency of small tacks, teeth, spurs and other positive fasteners.

My invention thus possesses certain manifest advantages, for, as the lid or cover of the box is usually composed of thin sections of wood or other fragile material which is easily split or broken, I eliminate the possibility of the lid being injured or destroyed as would be liable to occur should tacks, spurs, or the like, be driventhereinto to secure the fastener in place.

Furthermore I propose to provide a fastening device adapted to. frictionally engage or clamp the lid of the box, and

having a keeper engaging member designed to-cooperate with a socket or other keeper,

so that the lid, when in closed position and securely fastened, may be held against movement relative to the box body, thus preserving the contents of the box from exposure and the consequent liability of damage and injury.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener which is preferably formed from a single blank or piece of metal, the structural simplicity of the device being such that but a comparatively small amount of material is used, and but relatively few steps are employed in its manufacture, thereby enabling great quantities of these devices to be made, marketed and put in use at an exceedingly low cost. 7

With the above cited objects and others of a similar nature in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling, within thescope of the appended claims.

, Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, .letter A indicates as an entirety a relatively small box, such as may be employed for packaging little cigars,

cigarettes and the like, this box being preferably made of small thin sections of stiff material such as cedar wood.v The top of the box, indicated by the numeral 1, is hinged as at 2 to the rear wall of the body of the box in any suitable manner. The top edge of the front wall of the box is bored orcut out, as-at 3, to constitute a socket or keeper for receiving and seating the keeper engaging member ofthe fasteneras hereinafter described.

" The clip member of my fastener is indicated as an entirety by the letter B and is preferablyformed of a thin plate or blank of. metal suchas brass, sheet steel, or the like, shown in Fig; 6. The blank or plate of metal is bent or folded into channel like shape orvform, so that the top wing 4, the bottom wing 5 extending parallel with the top wing, and the front or connecting wall 6 result. are centrally bowed outwardly as at 10 and then bent inward at their free terminals as at 11, these terminals touching with the result that the tongues possess a certain degree of resiliency.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. When in use the clip is applied to a box "as shown in Fig. 1, and, when the box cover is closed, the tongues will enter the keeper socket, and, engaging with the wall of the latter, will firmly secure the 'box lid in closed position.

It will be noted that I have provided an exceedingly simple, yet efficient device of this character, which, owing to its construction, may be manufactured, marketed and applied in use in great quantities at a relatively small cost thereby attaining a considerable saving from a manufacturers standpoint. Furthermore, the fastening'de- 'vice is positive in operation inasmuch as it will securely hold the cover against accidental opening, and especially against yielding or working sidewise thereby insurthat when the box is carried about in the pocket it will not accidentally open and cause the contents to spill or empty into the pocket.

In the present instance, Ihave shownmy invention as employed in connection with a box intended particularly forholding small cigars, cigarettes and the like, but I Wish it to be understood that it is not limitedin its useful application tot-his purpose, as it may be employed in any connection wherein its use will be found advantageous.

In packing the goods for the market, after the cigars or cigarettes have been placed in the box and the lid fastened down, the usual revenue stamp may be applied so as to overlie and conceal the fastener, the lower portion of the stamp being pasted to the front of the boxand the upper portion to the lid, so that when the boxis opened the'stamp will be torn and thus destroyed as will be readily understood.

While I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to all the details of construction herein set forth by way of illustration, as modification and variation may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

box lid and a bight section connecting the front portions of said wings and adapted to bear against the front edge of the lid, and a plurality of resilient keeper-engaging tonguesformed integral with and depending at right angles from one of said wings.

2. A box lid fastener, comprising a plate bent to channel form to provide a clip having a Wing adapted to bear against the top face of a box lid, a secon i wing adapted to bear against the under face of the box lid, and a connecting wall forming a bight section for the clip and adapted to bear againstthe front edge of the box lid and a keeperenga'ging tongue depending from that ring which bears against the under face of the box lid.

A box lid fastener, comprising a clip bent to form a body section adapted to fit over the edge of a box cover, one section of said clip being slotted, the material of the slots being bent outwardly and oppositely bowed to form resilient tongues constituting keeper engaging members.
