BILLIAED OR POOL TABLE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed October 5, 1915. Serial No. 54,260.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER D. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest City, in the county of Winnebago, and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard or Pool Table Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a pool table attachment, and more particularly to the class of pocket leather protecting devices for pocket billiard or pool tables.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the leather surrounding the top edge of the pocket in a billiard or pool table will be protected from the impact of the billiard or pool ball when entering said pocket, thereby obviating the wearing away of the leather as usual, and thus avoiding the necessity of repairs as is customary.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which serves as a protector that can be instantly attached to andfirmly held in place at the point where the ball strikes the leather rein forcement in a billiard or pool table, and thus saves the leather and chipping of balls.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of a pool table showing the pocket with the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the pocket. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device removed. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a portion of a pool table, and B the pocket therein, which is of the ordinary well-known construction having a leather covering C at the top edge of the pocket against which strikes the ball when entering the pocket. I
The device comprises a substantially ovalshaped resilient section 5, preferably made from a plurality of plies of fabric cemented to each other and having a rubber coating.
At the inner side of the resilient section is a spring clip 6 formed from a single strip of resilient material and bent into the shape shown.
Passed through the section 5 and through the ends of the clip 6 are rivets 7 which fasten the clip centrally upon the section.
The clip 6 is forced over the top edge of the pocket so that the resilient section 5 will serve as a cushion for receiving the impact of the billiard or pool ball when entering the pocket, thereby protecting the leather to avoid wearing away of the same and also the chipping of the balls when playing a game of pool or billiards.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
YVhat is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a resilient section, and a resilient clip carried by the section and holding the same in shape for embracing the upper edge of the pocket in a billiard or pool table.
2. A device of the class described comprising a cushion member, and a clip carrying the same for detachably mounting the cushion member on the top edge of a pocket in a billiard or pool table.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER D. PORTER.
