Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed January 3, 1914. Serial No. 810,259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD SLADEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved means for retaining small articles such as pencils, rulers, and pocket combs, in the pocket preventing the accidental displacement of the same therefrom. The principal objectof this invention is to provide a device of this character which is formed from a single sheet of metal so as to provide a rule engaging member, a clasp for engagement with the pocket, and a pencil holder, which retains the elements in engagement througlrthe inherent elasticity of the metal which is used.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating the application thereof; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation showing to advantage the pocket engaging clasp; Fig. 3 is a front elevation advantageously illustrating the pencil holder; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 4% of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention,
in order to illustrate the application thereof,
a case 6 is provided which is of the ordinary type for containing rules, pocket combs or the like, in the present instance havlng a rule 7 associated therewith in order to illustrate the application of the invention.
My improved device comprises a retalner 8 formed from a single strap of metal which conforms to the configuration of the case 6, providing a collar which has extending from one of the marginal edges thereof a finger 9 which is reversely folded upon itself to provide the pocket engaging clasp, said finger being arcuated in order to facilitate the retention of the same in the pocket. The free end 10 of said finger is slightly flared outwardly in order to permit of the same being readily and automatically engaged with the pocket by merely exerting pressure on the upper end thereof or on the upper end of the case 6, when the latter is mounted in the collar or retainer 8. Extendlng from the lower marginal edge of the retainer 8 is a portion 11 which slightly tapers as indicated at 11 toward its lower end, the extreme lower end being provided with 'lateral projections 12 the opposite ends of which are snugly engaged as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 5, said lateral projections being provided with correspondingly cut away portions in order to provide a smooth outer and inner periphery which in no way detracts from the appearance thereof and will eliminate sharp edges or the like, at the same time being sufiiciently resilient so as to frictionally engage the pencil 13 which is held therein. The lugs or ears 12 are each of a semicircular configuration so as to provide a circular collar or sleeve which engages with the penoil as previously pointed out, and may be expanded if so desired to retain pencils of larger diameters than that of the'ordinary pencils now in use, or may be used in other capacities for retaining other objects if so desired.
From the above it is obvious that a simple, eflicient, durable and inexpensive device is provided which may be stamped from a single sheet of metal so as to provide the collar 8 and the projections 9 and 11.
It will be understood thatthe above de scription and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by' Letters Patent is 1. An article of manufacture including a strap formed into substantially rectangular configuration, and having portions extending from the opposite marginal edges of said strap.
2. A device of the character described ineluding a strap formed into. substantially rectangular configuration, the marginal edges thereof having portions projecting therefrom to provide'a clasp element and a pencil retainer.
3. An article of manufacture includlng a metallic strap rolled into a configuration whereby to provide a collar, a portion of the upper marginal edge thereof being extended and reversely folded upon itself and a por the lowermarginal edge of said collarin parallelism with said, first mentioned portlon having semiclrcular ears formed on the free terminal end thereof, the proximate ends of said collar being engaged to provide a sleeve. a
5. A device of the character described including a metallic strap stamped from a single sheet of metal rolled into substantially elliptical configuration to provide a collar, a portion of the upper marginal edge thereof being extended and reversely folded upon the collarto provide a clasp and a portion of the lower marginal edge being ex tended and provided with semicircular lugs, the ends of said semicircular lugs being overlapped for engagement with an object. 6. device as specified, including a band engageable with an object and formed of a single strap of metal of substantially elliptical configuration, a tongue formed integral with said band and extending from one of the marginal edges thereof and folded reversely into parallelism with the band, a second tongue formed integral with the said band and upon the opposite marginal edge from the first mentioned tongue, and lateral extensions on the lower .endof said tongue rolled into substantially circular configuration to engage an object, the endsof said lateral extensions being overlapped, said ends being cut awai to facilitate the overlapping of the said lateral extensions.
In testimony whereofl afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses; g t
