Description

' Y- B -swam OF ee eNses n onres.-
Sne i e ci ene. feten Patentegl Feh, 1, 1916.
Application filed May 12, L915. Serial No. 27,622.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Brno C. Boo wn L, a citizen of the Un ted S ates, e. ling Camden, in the county of Ouachite and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Door-Hinge, of which the fol owm is a specification.
h d i e fo ming the subje matt r of this application is adapted to be employed for suspending a swinging barrier, such as a screen door.
By Way of explanation it may be stated that hitherto it has been proposed to insert into the door jamb, a screw eye, receivlng .one end of an angular hook, the other end of which is threaded into the door. When a common angular hook is used, the heck engages one side only of the screw eye, and as a consequence, the screw eye tilts out .of a horizontal position under .the weight of the door, thereby permitting a dropping of the door. I
The present invention aims to provide a screw hook of simple form comprising a body portion which projects beyond the pintle in a direction opposite to the shank, whereby both sides of the screw eye maybe engaged at once, thereby preventing a t lting of the screw eye, the invent on aiming to provide a hook of this sort wh1ch may be fashioned into the desired shape by a simple bending operation, as distinguished from a structure which must be cast in one plece to the desired shape.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :F1gure 1 shows in front elevation, a portion of a door jamb and a screen door, wherewith one form of the invention has been assembled, a portion of the door being broken away. Flg. 2 is a side elevation showing one form of screw hook wherein the present inventlon has been embodied; Fig. 3 is a top plan of the structure shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4: 1s a bottom plan of the structure shown in Flg. 2; Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 6 is an end elevation ofthe structure shown in Fig. 5;.Fig- 1 is a bottom plan of the structure shown in Fig. 5 Fig. 8 is atop plan showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. ,9 is a bottom plan of the structure shown in Fig. 8; Fig. .10 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 11 is an endelevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1.0; Figure 12 is a bottom plan of the structure shown in Fig. 10, the words top and bottom being used in the foregoing description of figures as relating to the positions of the several hooks when the same are in use; Fig. 1-3 is a sectional view of a diagrammatic nature employed in explaining the advantages of the present invention.
In the accompanying drawings and referring particularly to Fig. 1, the numeral 1 designates a door jamb, and the numeral 2 indicates a horizontally swinging barrier, such as a screen door.
Comparing Fig, 1 with Fig. 13 it may be stated that hitherto it has been proposed to insert into the door jamb 1 an ordinary screw eye Into the door '2. is inserted a screw hook 4, the hinge pintle of which is shown at 5. As shown in Fig. 13, the shank of the screw hook 4 bears against one side of the screw eye 8 but does not bear against the opposite side 7 thereof. As a consequence the screw eye 3, as is clearly shown, tilts into an inclined position with respect to the horizontal as indicated by the line AB under the weight of the door, the door dropping downwardly as indicated by the arrow C.
Reverting to Fig. 1 wherein one embodiment of the present invention is shown, a screw eye 8 is inserted into the door jamb 1 and in connection with the screw eye 8 is employed a door carried angle hook embodying a shank 9 threaded as shown at 10 to engage with the door 2. The shank 9 is bent into spiral form to fashion a body 11, the extremity of the body being prolonged at right angles to the shank 9 to form a hinge pintle 12 which may be tapered as shown at 1 1 to permit the ready insertion of the pintle 12 into the screw eye 8. Noting the point at which the reference character 15 is applied, it will be observed that the body 10 projects beyond the pintle 12 in a direction opposite to the shank 9.
Noting again Fig. 13, it will be observed that such a hook as that shown in Figs. 1, 2,
screw eye into the plane indicated by the line A-B. Preferably the screw eye 8 is mounted in thedoor jamb 1 and thescrew hook" is mounted in the door 2. This'construction permits a fine adjustment of the door 2 toward and away from the outer face of the jamb v1 since, in orderitoimove the screw eye 8 toward and away fronrthe outer face of the jamb 1, the screw eye need be given but a half turn, whereas, if the screw hook with its pintle 12 were mounted in the j amb 1, it would be necessary to give the hook a complete turn in order thatit might be effective.
As shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, the threaded shank appears at 16 and is given a single backward turn to form the body 17 the body being extended to form the hinge pintle 18. v As shown at 19, the body projects forwardly of the pintle 18 and exercises the functions hereinbefore attributed to the body 11.
In Figs. 9 and 10, the threaded shank appears at 20, the body at 21, and the pintle at 28, the body projecting forwardly of the pintle as shown at 22. This form of the invention differs from the form shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 only in that the bend which forms the body 21 is reversed, so that the body 21 lies on the opposite side of the shank 20 from the position assumedby the body 17' with respect to the shank 16.
In Figs. 10, 11 and 12, the shank appears at 24, the body at 25, the pintle at 26, and the projecting portion of the body at 27.
"In this form of the invention, the shank is back bent'upon itself to cause the" body 5 to lie verticallyoabove the shank 24;.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: 1 1. As-an article of manufactureforiuse in door suspension, a" screw hook embodying a shank which is bent upon itself to form a hinge pintle and to form a body which projects beyond the pintle in a direction opposite to the shank.
2. As an artlcle of manufacture for use in door suspension, a screw hook embodying a shank which is bent upon itself to form a BYRD C. ROCKWELL.
