ADJUSTABLE RIFLE-SIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18, 1916.
Application filed January 24, 1916. Serial N 0. 73,908.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR G. KLUGEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Adjustable Rifle-Sight; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable rifle sight, whereby the sight may be adjusted to any degree of fineness which may be required by the individual eye. The eye sight of individuals being in most cases different, and the ordinary rifle sight being so made that it cannot be adjusted to suit the individual it is found desirable to make an adjustable sight, which may be adapted to fit the eye of the individual using it, and this has been accomplished by means of two interlocking toothed disks having projections extending upwardly to form a sharp V shaped sight, when in their closed position, and to disappear behind the ordinary large sight when in their opened position. Said disks are adjusted by means of a worm screw on one side of the sight which engages and actuates one of said disks, which, in turn, actuates the other disk.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings, and the following description and claims.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a gun with the sight attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a proper view of the sight looking down thereon. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is a front elevation of the sight.
In the drawings there is shown a gun of the ordinary type, having a barrel 10, a stock 11, and a sight 12. The sight 12 consists of two plates secured together by the screws 13, one of said plates being rigidly attached to a base 14 which is secured to the rifle barrel of the gun. On the top edge of said plates in the center thereof there is a knife edge aperture 15 of the type generally used in the ordinary sight. Said plates are cut away at 16 so as to allow a pair of toothed wheels 17 and 18 to be pivoted therein at 19 and 20 respectively, so that the teeth of said disks engage each other. Each disk has an upward projection 21 and 22, which, when in their closed position, as shown in Fig. 3, form a V shaped aperture, thereby making a sharper sight to be used by those individuals having keener eyes. There is a worm threaded screw 23 extending in an opening between said plates 24 and having a recess 25 in the top thereof, for engaging one of the screws 13, thereby holding it in fixed relation to said plates, and allowing it to be turned therein. The worm threads on said screw 23 are adapted to engage the teeth in the disk 18, so that as said screw is turned, the disk 18 will be actuated thereby, and at the same time operate the disk 17. It will therefore, be readily seen that by turning said screw, the projections on said disk may be made to completely disappear between said plates, so that the ordinary type of sight may be used, or may gradually be made to approach each other, until a sharp V shaped sight is formed. The pro ections may be set at any desired position to form a sight adapted to the individuals use.
The invention claimed is:
1. An adjustable gun sight including a base adapted to be secured to the barrel of the gun, an upright sight secured to said base having a notch in the top thereof, movable means on said sight for reducing the size of said notch, and means for actuating said movable means.
2. An adjustable gun sight including a base adapted to be secured to the barrel of the gun, an upright sight secured to said base having a notch in the top thereof, a movable means on said sight for reducing the size of said notch, and a worm screw for actuating said movable means.
3. An adjustable gun sight including a base adapted to be secured to the barrel of the gun, an upright sight secured to said base having a notch in the top thereof, disks pivoted on said sight having projections adapted to extend into said notch, and means for actuating said disks.
4. An ad ustable gun sight including a base adapted to be secured to the barrel of the gun, an upright sight secured to said base having a notch in the top thereof, disks pivoted to said sight adapted to engage each other, projections on said disks extending into said notch adapted to reduce the size thereof when closed, and means for actuating said disks.
IOU
5. An adjustable gun sight including a base adapted to be secured to the barrel of the gun, an upright sight secured to said base, having a notch in the top thereof, toothed disks pivoted on said sight and adapted to engage each other, projections on said disks extending into said notch for reducing the size thereof when closed, and a worm screw for engaging said teeth, and actuating said disks.
6. An adjustable gun sight including a base adapted to be secured to the barrel of said gun, upright plates secured to said base having a notch in the top thereof, toothed disks pivoted between said plates and adapted to engage each other, projections extending up from said disks into said notch for enlarging or decreasing the size thereof when said disks are actuated, means for securing said plates together, and a worm screw extending between said plates adapted to engage the teeth and actuate one of said disks.
7. An adjustable gun sight including a base adapted to be secured to the barrel of said gun, upright plates secured to said base having a notch in the top thereof, toothed disks pivoted between said plates and adapt ed to engage each other, projections eXtending up from said disks into said notch for enlarging or decreasing the size thereof when said disks are actuated, means for securing said plates together, a worm screw, and means for holding said screw in place whereby it may be turned.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
OSCAR Gr. KLUGEL.
