Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Conennm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, county of Bronx, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Level, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a level having a level member which is normally rotatably disposed in a circular opening in a frame, an annular flange being provided having orifices at recesses in a serrated disk and which register with threaded orifices in the level member so that screws which are provided, may be disposed in the orifices and in the recesses for holding the level member in adjusted position. The level member has a limited rotary movement relatively to the disk and the frame when the pressure of the annular flange, against the disk is removed by turning the screws. The level member is constructed in two parts which are normally held together so that the part with the threaded orifices may be moved away from the other part which moves the screws, topermit of a readjustment of the disk relatively to the teeth on the frame which engage the serrated edge of the disk.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention isdisclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement; Fig. 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but with the annular flange removed; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan view showing a modified form of the invention; Fig. 6 is a view of the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5, but with the annular flange removed; Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 77 of Fig. 6; and Fig. 8 is a sectional View on the line 8-8 of Fig. 5.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a frame 10 is provided having a circular opening 11 therethrough in which is disposed a level member 12. This level member is constructed in two parts 12 and 12 the part 12 having a flange 13 for en gaging the face 1.4: of the frame 10, this part 12* also having an inner thread 15 with which meshes an outer thread 16 on the part 12 The level member 12 is constructed in two parts to assist in securing the spirit members 17 in position, these spirit members being preferably secured in the part- 12", after which the parts 12 and 12 are screwed together to prevent the displacement of the said spirit members 17.
As has been stated the level member 12 is disposed in the circular opening 11 in the frame 10 and with the flange 13 engaging the face 14 of the said frame. Secured to the opposite face 18 of the frame 10 there are twoarms 19 with teeth 20 which engage the serrated edge 21 of the disk 22, so that the said disk 22 may be held relatively to the frame 10' in adjusted position. This disk 22 has a central opening 23 through which the spirit members 17 may be seen. The disk 22 also has recesses 24: through which are disposed screws 25, which are also disposed in the orifices 26 in the annular flange 27. These screws 25 mesh in the threaded orifices 28 in the port 12 of the level member 12 and when they are turned home forcing the annular flange 27 against the disk 22, they serve to prevent the rotation of the level member 12 relatively to the disk 22 and the frame 10; but it will be seen that when the screws 25 are turned sufliciently to free the annular flange 27 from the disk 22, the level member 12 may have a slight rotary movement relatively to the said disk and frame because of the size of the recesses 24 which permit the screws 25 to move a short distance with thelevel member 12 and the flange 27 relatively to the disk 22.
When the level member 12 having the spirit members 17 has been adjusted in a general way relatively to the frame 10, and the disk 22 has been disposed in position with its serrated edge 21 in engagement with the teeth 20 on the arms 19, the flange 27 may be disposed in position and the screws 25 may be disposed in the orifices 26, the recesses 24 and in the threaded orifices 28. When this has been done the level part 12 may be rotated slightly by means of the flange 27 until the level part 12 is positioned exactly as desired relatively to the frame 10, it then being possible for the user to turn the screws 25 home, pressing the annular flange 27 against the disk 22 for preventing any movement of the level member 12 relatively to the said disk 22, the disk 22 being by the same operation, held down against the face 18 of the frame 10 and with this serrated edge in engagement with the teeth 20 on the arms 19 to prevent any rotary movement of the said disk relatively to the frame.
The general construction of the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8 is the same as that shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4:, but with the exception that the level member 30,sh0wn in the modified form, is constructed in a cylindrical piece in which the spirit members 31 are secured, this cylindrical piece being partially inclosed by the flange 32 which engages the face 33 of the frame member 34, the flange 32 being held in position relatively to the level member 30 by means of the screws 35 which are disposedin orifices 36 in the flange 32 which mesh in threaded orifices 37 in the level member 30. In other respects the modified form of the invention is the same as that shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, the screws 25 which are disposed in the orifices 26, in the annular flange 27, being disposed in the recesses 24 in the disk 22 and meshing in the threaded orifices 37 in the level member 30. When the level shown in Figs. 1 to 4: of the drawings is used, adjustment may be made by unscrewing the part l2 relatively to the part 12 by means of thestuds 29 when the disk 22 may be adjusted relatively to the frame 10, after which the position of the flange 27 with the part l2 may be adjusted relatively to the frame 10. When this has been done, the parts may be secured in adjusted position by screwing the parts 12 and 12" together.
When adjustment of the level shown in Figs. 5 and 8 is desired, the screws 35 are unscrewed, after which the disk 27 is moved away from the arms 19 and rotated as desired,;jafter which the disk is moved back with its serrated edge in engagement with the teeth 20 on the arms 19, any further slightadjustment being possible by a move ment of the flange 27 relatively to the disk and the frame before the screws 35 are turned home.
j Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.. In a level, a frame having an opening, a level member rotatably disposed in the opening and having a threaded orifice, a disk having a recess and disposed against a side of the frame, means for adjustably securing the disk against rotation relatively to the frame, a flange having an orifice and disposed against the disk, and a screw disposed in the last mentioned orifice and in the recess and meshing in the threaded orifice.
In a level, a frame having an opening, a level member rotatably disposed in the opening and having a threaded orifice, a disk adjustably disposed against a side of the frame, means to prevent the disk from rotating relatively to the frame, aflange engaging thedisk and having an orifice, and a screw disposed in the second mentioned orifice and meshing in the first mentioned orifice.
3. In a level, a frame having an opening, a level member rotatably disposed in the opening and having a threaded orifice, a disk disposed against a face of the frame and having a serrated edge and a recess, an
arm on the frame having a tooth engaging the serrated edge of the disk, a flange hav- 1ng an orifice and disposed against the disk, and a screw meshing in the last mentioned orifice and in the recess, and meshing in the threaded orifice.
4. In a level, a frame having an opening, a level member rotatably disposed in the opening and having a flange for engaging a face of the frame, the level member having a threaded orifice, a disk having a recess disposed against the opposite face of the frame,
means for adjustably securing the disk against rotation relatively to the frame, a flange having an orifice and disposed against the disk anda screw disposed in the last mentioned orifice and in the recess and meshing in the threaded orifice.
5. In a level, a frame having an opening, a level member rotatably disposed in the opening and having a flange for engaging a face of the frame, the level member having two threaded orifices spaced apart, a
disk having a central opening and two recesses, the disk being disposed against the opposite face of the frame with its recesses disposed adjacent the threaded orifices, means for adjustably securing the disk against rotation relatively to the frame,an
annular flange with a central opening disposed against the outer side of the disk, the flange having two orifices registering with the threaded orifices in the level member and screws disposed in the last mentioned orifice, the screws passing through the recesses and meshing in the threaded orifices.
6. In a level, a frame having an opening, a level member rotatably disposed in the openin and constructed in two parts which have t reads meshing with each other, a
flange on one of the parts for engaging the face of the frame at the opening, there being a threaded orifice in the other Fart, a spirit member in one of the parts 0 the level, a
disk having a .recess and disposed against the opposite face of the frame, means for adjustably securing the disk against rotain the last mentioned orifice and in the recess and meshing in the threaded orifice, and means for limiting the movement of the level member in the direction of the said side of the frame.
