DAVID ALEXMEB-RITT, OF ABBEVILLE, ALABAMA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DlxvInfA. Mnanrr'r, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Abbeville, in the county of Henry, State of Alabama, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lamp attachments, particularly to an attachment for an ordinary oil lamp, and has for its object the provision of a combined chimney protector and heating attachment adapted to be connected with the burner and chimney of an ordinary oil lamp.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will permit the chimney to be swung to one side so that the lamp may be lighted, means being provided for preventing too great movement of the chimney.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which may be quickly and easily removed or placed in position.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character having means whereby the various parts will be held firmly and resiliently in position.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, efficient and durable in use and a general improvement of the art.
WVith these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp having my device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the chimney tilted to permit lighting the lamp, and Fig. & is a top plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the numeral 5 designates a lamp base of any ordinary form provided with the usual burner 6 having a flange 7 carrying spring fingers 8 adapted to grip the lower cylindrical portion 9 of a lamp chimney 10.
In carrying out my invention I provide an annular ring 11 surrounding the lower por- Specification of LettersPatent. Pgyhgntefl J 1A8 19316, Application flied a rn 24, 1915. Serial No. 23,712.
In order that the swingin movement may be limited to prevent the chimney from falling, I provide asemi-circular wire 16 secured upon the finger 13 and having its ends detachably engaged within openings 17 in the fingers 8. 'When the chimney is swung over, the wire 16 will limit its movement as shown in Fig. 3. The wire however may be detached from the openings 17 when it is desired to remove the chimney.-
Disposed upon the upper portion of the chimney 10 is a frame comprising an annular ring 18 having upwardly extending arms 19 connected therewith. Adjacent the eX- treme top of the chimney, the arms 19 are bent outwardly and then bent upon themselves as shown at 20 to form substantially horizontal portions 21 which are connected with a ring 22. Adjacent the bends 20 the arms 19 are further provided with a ring 23. The frame work thus formed is disposed upon the chimney and is adapted to support a vessel containing water or other matter to be heated. In order that this frame and the ring 11 may be properly held upon the chimney, Iprovide a pair of coil springs 22% which have their upper ends connected with the ring 18 and their lower ends connected with the fingers 13 and 15.
The device is applied by slipping the frame work upon the upper portion of the chimney, slipping the ring 11 upon the lower portion of the chimney and then hooking the springs 24: in place. The ends of the wire 16 are then engaged with the fingers 8 and the catch on the finger 13 is engaged with the flange 7 of the burner.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple, novel and efficient device for attachment with a lamp whereby the chimney may be easily handled,
Which Will protect the chimney and by means of Which articles may be conveniently supported upon the chimney so that they may be heated. V 7,
It will be readily understood that I reserve the right tomake various changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention or limiting the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I c'laim:-
1. In combination With a lamp burner and chimney, a ring engaging the lower portion of the chimney and pivotally connected with the burner, an upwardlyextending spring finger secured on each side of said ring, a spring catch formed on one of said fingers and engaging said burner, a frame disposed over the upper end of the chimney and adapted to support an article to be heated and a pair of coil springs connected With said spring fingersand said frame,
2; In comblnatlon With a lamp burner and chimney, the burner being provided With upstandlng spring fingers, a ring disposed upon the lower portion of the chlmney and I hingedly connected with the burner, a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed upstanding spring fingers secured upon said ring intermediate of said first named spring fingers, a spring catch formed on the lower end of one of said second named spring fingers and detachably engaging said burner, a resilient Wire secured upon said last named spring finger and detachably connected with said first named spring fingers, an article supporting frame disposed upon the upper end of the chimney, and a pair of coil springs connected With said frame and said second named spring fingers.
In testimony whereof, I 'aflix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses. I p
