TREE-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
Application filed October 31, 1911. Serial No. 657,771.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER M. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houstgn, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Tree-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tree heaters.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a device of the character described for the purpose of generating and distributing heat and so constructed that it may be suspended from or placed beneath small trees and shrubs for the purpose of raising the temperature of the atmosphere surrounding the same in order to prevent said trees or shrubs and the fruit thereof from being injured by reason of cold.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for protecting the branches contacting with the heater against being burned or injured by the heat.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein The figure is a sectional side elevation of the complete device.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a surrounding loose wire mesh fabric, which is cylindrical in shape. of this cylinder fits closely down over the fuel receptacle 2 which is similar in shape to the cylinder 1, but extends only a short distance up within the same. This receptacle is provided to contain the fuel oil and has the usual burner 3, which is provided with a wick, (not shown) in the usual man ner of such burners and for a similar purpose. Secured upon the oil receptacle 2 and surrounding the burner is the flue 4: which is composed of sheet metal and is provided to protect the flame and to cause a complete combustion of the oil which flows from the receptacle through the burner wick. This flue extends up a considerable distance above the burner and arranged thereabove is a de- The bottom portion flector 5 which is circular in shape and whose outer edge has a considerable downward curve, so as to surround the upper end of the flue and to distribute the heat passing upward therefrom. This deflector is somewhat less in diameter than the diameter of the surrounding wire mesh cylinder so as not to contact with said cylinder and heat the same, and is secured in place by suitable stays 6.
The numeral 7 refers to a bail which is preferably composed of wire which extends across the top of the device as shown and down each side thereof and terminates at each end in an inwardly extending hook 8 which projects through a sleeve 9 carried by the top of the receptacle 2, said hooks and sleeves serving to secure said receptacle in place. The bail is held in place by means of suitable lugs 10 secured on each side of the device and through which the bail ex-v tends. This bail is flexible and the hooks 8 may be readily withdrawn from the eyes 9 and the oil receptacle 2 and the flue 4:, carried thereby, then readily removed from the wire mesh cylinder of the heater.
What I claim is A device of the character described including a cylindrical-shaped body composed of wire mesh fabric, a fuel receptacle in the bottom of said body, a burner carried by said receptacle, a cylindrical shaped flue carried by the receptacle and surrounding the burner and having its upper end open, a circular shaped deflector secured above said flue and having its rim downwardly curved, a bail for said device extending across the top thereof and down opposite sides, means securing the bail to the cylindrical body, a hook carried by each free end of said bail and a sleeve carried by the top of the fuel receptacle on each side in which the hooks of the bail engage.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
