ORCHARDTHEATER.
Specification of 'Letters Patent. I Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
Application led Hay 21, 19412. Serial No. 698,746.
ATo all whom t may concern Be itlmown thatliwe, NATHAN B. NEW- COMER and CARL 0. JOHNSON, of Paonia, in the county of Delta and State of Colorado, (each of whose post-office address is Pao- `nia,'Colorado,) have invented certain new .and useful Improvements in Orchard-Heaters; and wefdo hereby declare the following to be a full; clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others Skilled inthe art to 'which it appertains to make and use the same. v The object of our invention is to provide an improved "and etiicient heater for or! chards, in the use of which uniform radiation. of'he'at is secured in all directions without the creation of much if any smoke, and
with the consumption of but a minimum quantity of fuel. p
4In the drawings, Figure l is a View in perspective of our invention. Fig. 2 is ay vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a modification. I
Referring to the drawings, l designates an open topcontainer or reservoir in which the fuel, preferably crude oil, is burned. This contalner is shown as circular in crosssection, and is open only at the top. lTwo ring-like platesf, 4, of slightly greater diameter than the container, are designed to rest upon the upper edge thereof, and each is formed With a seriescf vertical openings 5, 5', respectively, these openings together forming a passageway through which air may be drawn into the container'. The plate 3 may be moved over the plate 4 for the purpose of regulating the size of these openings and consequently the air inlet.
6 is a radiator whichwe haveshown in the form of an inverted frustumof a cone.
Its smaller end fits within the centralv openmay be removed to increase 'the draft, and may be employed as a cover for the container when the device is' not in use.
The crude oil is placed in the container and lighted, and the radiator being in position, air is drawn into the container through the vertical openings in the supporting ring and into the radiator through the horizontal openings 7. In this way not only is a coniplete draft secured, but substantially all combustible gases are completely consumed in the radiator, thus preventing smoke and securing thorough and uniform radiation of th'e heat.
Y In Fig. 3 we have shown a slight modification, the radiator 6 at its lower end being of approximately the same size as the top of the container l upon which .it is designed to fit while itsV upper end is of somewhat 'smaller diameter. l-Near its opposite ends the radiator has two series of clicumfereir tial openings 7 and 8. f The admission of air through opening 7 l may be regulated by a damper l0, in the form of a circular band.
We claim as our invention:
l. In.combination with a container, a radiator mounted thereon, one of said members having openings thereinto at their meeting ends, a circumferential damper for regulating the passage through said openings,l said radiator being closed at its top and having circumferential openmgs 1m-.
mediately adjacent said top.
2. Aportable orchard heater comprising an imperforate fuel container, a radiator', and ring-like lplates mounted on said container, and having 'each a seriesv of-vertical openings', said radiator fitting on said rings, and h ving auupper and lower series of air openiiilrs.
In testimony whereof, we have signed this specification inthe `presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NATHAN B. NEwooMER.` CARL o. JOHNSON.
