Description

No. 806,899. EATENTEE EEG. 12, 1905. N. E. HAMEL.
PLATE LIETEE.
APPLIGATION FILED MAY Z2. 1905.
NORBERT D. HAMEL, OF GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PLATE-LIFTER.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed May 22, 1905. Serial No. 261,639.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NORBERT D. HAMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardner, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Lifters and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plate-lifters.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby hot plates, pans, or dishes may be lifted without danger of being burned thereby, said device being particularly well adapted for lifting pieplates, means being provided whereby a guard is formed around the inner edge of the plate to prevent the article lifted thereby from slipping off the lifter.
A further obj ect is to provide a plate-lifter which will be simple, strong and durable in construction, eHicient in operation, and well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of a plate-lifter constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 lis a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the dish-sup orting plate removed from the supportingame and showing the means whereby the same is connected to said plate, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the wire frame for supporting said plate.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a plate which, as here shown, is preferably circular in form and constructed of thin metal. On the edges of the plate at diametrically opposite points are integrally-formed radially-projecting tongues 2, and on the inner side edge of the plate midway between the tongues 2 is formed an integral tongue 3. Arranged on the upper side of the plate adjacent to the inner edge of the same is a supporting-frame 4, said frame being preferably formed of stiff wire and comprises a semicircular attaching portion 5, which is adapted to engage the upper side of the plate adjacent to the inner edge thereof. Around said attaching portion is clenched the tongues 2 and 3, thereby securely attaching said plate to the frame. Above the edge portion 5 of the frame is arranged a semicircular guard portion 6, said guard portion being formed by bending the wire upwardly and outwardly from the point where it is engaged by the tongues 2. The ends of the wire are brought together above the tongue 2, where the same are twisted, as
shown at 7, and bent upwardly and outwardly, as shown at 8. The outwardly-bent ends 8 of the wire are adapted to be inserted into a handle 9, which is preferably formed of wood and is provided on its inner end with a ferrule l0.
By the use of a plate-lifter constructed as herein shown and described hot plates or pans may be lifted from a stove or removed from the oven without danger of burning oneself and is used by inserting the plate l beneath the pan or dish, the thin construction of said plate permitting the same to be readily slipped beneath the dish or pan without employing other means for raising the same. The guard 6 formed by the wire supporting-frame prevents the dish or pan from slipping off the inner side of the plate.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lifter of the character described comn prising a plate having formed thereon radially-projecting tongues, a wire supportingframe secured to said plate by means of said tongues, a guard formed by said supportingframe, and a handle secured to said frame, substantially as described.
2. A lifter of the character described comprising a circular plate having formed thereon radially-disposed integral tongues, a supporting-frame formed of a single piece of wire bent to form an attaching member around which is clenched the tongues on said plate, a In testimony whereof I have hereunto set guard member arranged above said attachmy hand in presence of two subscribing witmg member7 the ends of the wire after formnesses.
ing said guard being twisted and bent up NORBERT D. HAMEL. 5 wardly and outwardly7 and a handle adapted Witnesses:
to receive said outwardly-bent ends of the LoUIs HAMEL,
wire, substantially as described. JOSEPH P. CARNEY.
