Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 21, 1915, Continuation in part of application Serial No. 485,078, filed March 22, 1909. This application filed October 18, 1911. Serial'No. 654,469.
T all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, BERTHA S. ALSOP, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New .York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Sugporters, of which the following is a speci cation. r
My invention relates particularly to womens hose or stocking supporters and combination devices for holding down corsets, waists, etc.
()ne object is to provide a simple and reliable means for holding the. stockings up smoothly and securely without tearing them.
Another object is to hold the stockings up and the corset or waist down without discomfort to the wearer either when standing or sitting.
Another object is to provide ease of adjustment and freedom of movement.
The invention contemplates the use of two bands adapted to be independently adjusted above and below the knee and connected by vertical tapes at the sides. Preferably each band has an inelastic "elvet portion to pass around the front of the leg and an elastic portion for the rear of the leg. The vertical connecting side tapes are also preferably elastic and provided with eyes at their upper ends. Front and side straps preferably elastic are secured to the corset or waist and provided with fasteners at their lower ends for attachment to the eyes at the upper ends of the tapes and above the upper band. An additional elastic connecting tape may also be provided having its lower end'secured to the lower band and the upper end having an adjustable sliding connection at the rear of the upper band and with an eye for attachment to a rear strap from the corset.
The accompanying two sheets of drawings illustrate the invention in its preferable form.
The parts which engage a stocking adjacent the knee I will term for convenience the garter. The corset, waist, or other garment worn about the waist or over the hips I will for convenience term the corset, and the straps which connect the corset with a garter, I will call the corset straps! Figure 1 is a perspective view showing 7 the adjustment of the invention in astanding.
ing position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the adjustment of the invention in a s1tt1ng' position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the invention showing the relative positions of the front, side and rear attachments. Fig. 4 shows one garter for the left leg. Fig. 5 1s a perspective view of the garter of Fig. 4 with the sides of the bands joined as in use. 1 Fig. showing the attachment strap and the garter eye.
The upper band or circlet front tab 3.
between a corset consists of the portion 1, the rear portion 2 and the The stripl has to bear excessive strains particularly when the wearer sits down as shown in Fig. 2 and for this reason it is preferably made inelastic to avoid stretching out of shape. It is preferably made. of velvet or covered with velvet or similar material so as to give a maximum frictional holding quality. One end is adjusted in a suitable buckle 4 or similar device for varying the length of the band. The parts 5 and 6 of a hook and eye combination are secured to the tab 3 and the strip 1 to afford means for readily coupling the ends of the band together.
The lower band is similarly made of strips 6 is a detail view 7. and 8 and tab 9 with a buckle 10 and hook the rear to allow greater freedom of motion for the muscles and cords back of the knee while the fronts of the bands are inelastic and thus prevent creeping and undue stretch- The upper and lower bands are connected by tapes 14 and 15 preferably of elastic strips s'ewedto the ends of the strips. 1 and 7 and the tabs 3 and 9 respectively so as to bring the tapes 14 and 15 at the sides of the lmee of the wearer. These tapes do not interfere with the freedom of movement of the wearer'and are so arranged as to press against the stocking and assist in holding it up. The upper ends of the tapes 14 and 15 project slightly above the upper band and are provided with eyes l6 and 17 for attachment to the corset straps. The tapes 14 and 15 being elastic, the eyes 16 and 17 have more or less freedom of motion to permit them to accommodate themselves to the ad- 7 inside eye 16 of the garter,
adjacent the upper ends of to the eye and justment of the bands and the movements of the wearer. An ornamental bow or rosette 18 may be provided if desired.
To the corset 20 are secured the straps such as 21 and 22 preferably of elastic webbing and each with an adjustment buckle such as 23 and a clasp or fastener such as 24. Each front strap 21 is attached to the the stud 25 of theclasp fitting in the eye 16 and the loop 26 holdmg it in place. This method of attachment' permits the clasp to move relative allows greater freedom of movement of the wearer particularly when sitting down. b
When additional means for holding the corset down is desired a strap 27 may be secured to the corset and the garter provided with an elastic tape 28. The lower end of the tape 28 is sewed to the inelastic strip 7 of the lower band adjacent the lower end of the, tape 1.4:. The upper end is provided with an adjustable connection by means of a frame 29 which can be slid along the strip 2 andthrough which the tape 28 may be adjusted to accommodate the wearer. The upper end has an eye 30 for attachment to the corset strap 27., By this construction it is possible to adjust the parts to any wearer and to take up any stretch due to wear.
The various parts are so constructed and arranged as to accommodate themselves to the movements of the wearer without causing any inconvenience or discomfort. The
knee caps are left entirely free and there are no constricting bands around the legimmediately back of the knee cap to cause discomfort at any time. b
-Both bands as well as the side tapes hold the stocking up and the lower band assists the upper band in opposing the tension of the corset straps without the use of any clasps or other fasteners gripping the fabric of the stocking.
It will be obvious that the garter may be made and sold separately from the corsets and corset straps and I accordingly claim the garters as articles of manufacture although intended to be used with the front and side corset straps as a part of the device for holding up the stockings and holding down the corset and iving what has become known as a straight ront effect.
This application is a partial continuation of #485,078, filedMarch 22, 1909.
