Be it known that I, CHARLES A. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, inthe county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specification.

The present application is a division of my application Serial No. 865266, filed October 6th, 1914:, and the invention herein disclosed consists in a novel means for locking the firing mechanism of a gun against release when the arm is cocked and for indicating the condition of the arm, whether safe or unsafe.

ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a fragment of a gun having the present improvement; Fig. 2 is a left side elevation. showing the locking device in locking relation to the firing mechanism; Fig. '3 is a plan of the device, detached from the gun; Fig. 4 shows parts of the gun and the locking device in longitudinal section; and, Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the gun. through the locking device, which appears in the unsafe position.

In the breech casing a at the rear of the barrel Z is arranged the breech-bolt c containing a striker d and the tiring pin e to be driven forward by the striker when the latter is released and advances under the influence of the spring f rearwardly supported by a suitable abutment means g.

rIhe locking device is a part-circular strap y' which extends under and embraces the breech-casing and is rotatably shiftable with reference thereto for a distance determined by the length of slots 7c through which extend screws l for retaining the strap in place.Y One end of the strap is bent oi to form a handle m. In the forward edge of the Strap is formed a recess ln.. Assuming the gun to be cocked and the strap to be in the position shown in Fig. 1, the location of this recess n is such as then to register with the lug It" of the trigger, which latter is therefore free to be operated to release the striker; upon the strap being turned to the position shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5, the recess will be out of registry with the lug h of the tr1gger-that is, the edge of the strap will underlie the said lug,- preventing the operation of the trigger.

As a means for indicating whether the firmg mechanism of the gun is locked or not by the strap, suitable indices or inscriptions, as Safe and Fire, may be provided on the breech casing and one end of the strap 1n such relation that the stra-p will obscure Safe and expose Fire ,when turned t0 the position shown in Fig. 1 and Safe will be exposed by the strap and Fire hidden by the part of the stock a which flanks the breech casing (Fig. 5) when the strap is in the full line position in-Figs. 2 and 5.

For holding the strap at either of its limits of movement, one of two notches o in the strap is adapted to be engaged by a spring-pressed plug p guided in a cup q inset in the stock.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, with the breech-including part of a gun, a firing mechanism, and a firing mechanism locking device embracing said part and rotative around the same into and out of locking relation to said mechanism.

2. In combination, with the gun barrel having a breech-casing, a firing mechanism and a firing mechanism locking device consisting of a strap embracing said breechcasing and rotative around the same, said strap opposing in one position thereof firing movement of said mechanism and in another position having a. recess registering with said mechanism and thereby allowing firing movement thereof.

3. A gun having a firing mechanism and also having xed parts one partly covered by the other, in combination with a, firing mechanism controlling device movable back L and 'forth between said parts, said device and the firstnamed part having indices of opposite sigmcance one of which is adapted to be covered by said device and the other mams@ by the second-named part alternately on back and forth movement of said device` 1n testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
