C. A. NELSON.
`HREARM.
APPLICATION FILED MAY15.1917
Patented Sept. 4, 1917.
(..Illl Illu-w" v. YE d M TA. .m A Ww C WITNESS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. NELSON, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SAVAGE ARMS CORPORA- TION, CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
FIREARM.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 4, 1917.
Application filed May 15, 1917. Serial No. 168,636.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES A. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inFirearms, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to firearms of the class in which the firing mechanism includes a longitudinally movable strikerfor equivalent firing means and a firing means dogging member movable in a fixed part of the arm into and out of dogging relation to said firing means, and it consists in a simple, reliable and conveniently manipulated means for adjusting the dogging member rela- `tively to the firing means so as to require more or less movement of said member, as desired, in order to release the firing means.
In the drawing,
Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a gun of the class indicated having the 'part thereof with which my inventionis immediately concerned in section;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the partofthe gun shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3-3, Fig. l.
a is the barrel having a rearward extension b forming the breech-casing, which contains the longitudinally movable breechbolt formed intwo sections, to wit, the rear rotary section o', having a handle (not shown) received by the rearwardly open angular slot cl in the breech-casing, and the forward section c, which is held against turning by suitable engagement with the breech casing. 'I he breech-bolt may be removed from thef gun in the usual manner, to wit, by rearward withdrawal when the handle thereof has been brought into the longitudi- -nal part of slot d.
, gaged by the dogging member.
At the under side the breech-casing has an opening h and registering with said open.
ing, when the breech-bolt is forward, breechbolt section c has an opening i.
YYThe dogging member in the present in- The do@ m extending through the o eninv n 7 z: c: b
It, is held bythe spring-pressed plug p bearing against the under side of the striker, being accommodated by the breech-bolt opening z' so as not to interfere with the longitudinal and rotary movement of its section o', and adapted to dog the striker at g in the cocking of the piece.
n the forward arm Z of the lever j is tapped an adjusting screw s whose head, when the piece is cocked, bears against the under side of the breech-casing in registry with a hole t therein at a point where, upon removal of the breech-bolt, saidl hole, and hence the head of the screw s, will be accessible through slot d to a screw-driver or other implement for turnin the screw.
Upon turning the screw t e bell-crank lever y' will be obviously shifted on its fulcrum so as to require more or less movement thereof in order to cause the dog m to clear the cooking shoulder g.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In. combination, with a fixed breech-casing-including part of a gun7 a breech-bolt arranged therein, firing mechanism including a longitudinally movable firing means housed. in the breech-bolt and a firing means dogging member movable in said fixed part into and out of dogging relation to said means, and an adjusting screw tapped in said member and having a heady abuttable with the screw-head and means affording access to said hole, on removal of the breechbolt, to an implement for adjusting said screw.
In testimony whereofI aix m signature.l
CHARLES A. LSON.
