Description

J. O. VAN VOURHIS. I
FIREARM. APPLICATION FILED JAN.9,1911.
985,308. Patented Feb. 28, 1911.
Inventor onrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE- rmmmr.
To-all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn OWEN VAN Voonnrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osawatomie, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fire arms, and more especially to the barrels. thereof; and the object of the same is to provide adetachable choke-piece for connection-with the discharge er'id ofthe barrel by improved means.
To this end the invention" consists in the specific form of the choke-piece and its means for connection to the barrel, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as shown in the drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shot gun with my improved choke-piece attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the barrel of'the shot gunwithout the choke-piece. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the choke-piece attached. Fig. at is a section of the line 4.--t of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the inner end of the choke-p1ece, and Fig. 6 is an end elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the letter R designates a shot gun having a barrel B and sights S as usual, and forming no part of the present invention. This gun is by reference made with a rather short barre .for use at short range, and the choke-piece forming the subject matter of the present invention is in reality an extension of said barrel adapted for attachment thereto by improved means which I will now describe.
- The numeral 4 designates a short section of the barrel, made by preference of the same material and conforming therewith exteriorl and interiorly,'and secured to and aroun the-inner end of thissection and extending beyond the end thereof (see dotted lines in Fig. 3) is a sleeve 7 whose walls are provided with a number (four are here; shown) of bayonet slots 8 having their innerv arms 9 set a little oblique to the outer arms 10. p
Projectin from the barrel B at points beyond the out sights are studs 2 disposed Specification of Letters Patent.

all in one plane and separated from each other to correspond with the disposition and number of the several bayonet slots 8 as best seen in Fig. 4, and hence the choke-piece can be slipped on the end of the barrel B so that the long arms 10 of the bayonet slots pass over the studs and then turned slightly so that the studs pass into the short arms 9 of said slots and bind the inner end of the extension barrel 4 against the outer end of the main barrel. In order to prevent the choke-piece as thus attached from becoming detached from the barrel of the shot gun, either accidentally or during the use thereof, I provide ratchet teeth 6'1n the inner end of the sleeve 7 as best seen in Fig. 5, and mount upon one side of the main barrel B (preferably its bottom) a spring-actuated catch best seen in Fig. 2 and which consists of a tongue-10 mounted in a housing 11 and pressed normally forward by a spring 12. Hence when the choke-piece is applied as above described, and slightly rotated so as' to bring the studs into the inner arms 9 of the bayonet slots,the ratchet teeth'6 slip over the beveled front end of the tongue 10' of the catch and latch the parts in position to prevent a retrograde movement which might permit the choke-piece to become dis lodged. Moreover, the oblique disposition of the inner arms 9 of the bayonet slots causes this slight rotation of the choker piece to close up the joint between it and the end of the barrel. The catch can be retracted by hand by the knob 13' rovided for that purpose; and obviously w on itis retracted,
In a choke-piecefor barrels, the combination with a barre a series of studs projecting radiallyf from it near its front end, and a spring ressed catch carried b the barrel; of a c oke-piece consist ing 0 an extension of said barrel, a sleeve secured. around and pro'ecting beyond its inner end and provlde with a serles of bayonet slots corresponding in number and disposition with said studs and having their as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signainner arms disposed oblique to a plane transture in the presence of two Witnesses. verse through the sleeve indl ratchet teeth 0n the inner end. of said sleeve adapted to JESSE OWEN VOORIHS' detachably engage said catch 'and take up Witnesses: 10st motion. L. W. GRANT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing EDGAR CAMPBELL;
