Application'ed November 14, 1914. Serial No. 872,150.
- To all whom it may concern VBe it known that I, ANDREw T. PRATHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rodeo, in the county of Grant and Stateof New Mexico,have invented a new and Improved Attaching Means for Grun- Silencers, of which the following is a' clear, andexact description;
. My invention has for its object to -provide-,means for securing a the muzzle vof a gun in a manner which will direct all the explosive gases through the silencer,thereby preventing anyl escape o l5 means and the barrel ofthe gun.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred form of'my invention is described.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all of the views, in which- -Figure 1 is a View showing a gun silencer attached by my improved means to the muzzle of a gun. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3' is a sectional plan view. of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse .sectional view on the line 4--4 in Fig. 1', 'and Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the sleeve used with my fastening means.
The drawings show my invention use with a gun having a barrel 10 angular in cross section. With a gun having such a barrel, it is impossible, as now provided to prevent the explosive gases from passing rearwardly from the muzzleof the gun between the gun barrel and the means which -are used for attaching the silencer to the gun barrel. `.With my invention, this diffi- Aculty is overcome, for the sleeve 11 which is secured around the muzzle 12 of the gun barrel 10, has a"threaded opening 13 in which meshes the outer thread'onA a nipple 14, the nipple being turned home against the end ofthe muzzle 12. This makes a tight joint between the .muzzle 12 of the un and the sleeve 11, thereby preventing any of theexplosive gases from passing rearwardlv between the sleeve 11 and the muzzle 12. The nipple 14 projectsbeyondf the sleeve 11 and meshes in a threaded opening 15 in the silenceigelG- in the usual manner. n the drawings, I show a silencer of the Maxim type, but it will be understood that other types of silencers may be used with my invention.
fun,
gun silencer to the gases' rearwardly between the fastening' ving a vprojection and As will best be seen by referring'to Fig. 5 of the drawings, the sleeve 11 has a longitndm'al slot 17 and a slot 18 at the opposite s1de,the slotl being provided to permit the arms 19 of the sleeve 11 toA pass rearwardly of the gun sight or other projection A20 .`on the.. barrellO. In the arms`19 there are grooves 21 in which are disposedthe "ends 22 of a transverse strap 23. The ends of this transverse strap 23 are secured to the arms 21 by the set screws 24, which are disposed through the orifices 25 in the arms 19; and which mesh in threaded orifices 26 1n the arms 19. When' the strap 23 is disposed against the rear of the sight 2O and the nipple 14 is turned home against the end ofthe muzzle 12,
and when the outer end of the nipple 14 is in mesh with the inner thread 15 on the silencer 16 and the silencer is turned home against the sleeve 11, it will be found lthat any escape wardly of the muzzlev of the gun between the muzzle .12 and the sleeve 11, will be prevented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Fatent- 1. In an article of the class described, a
d silencer with a threaded opening, a sleeve,
the sleeve to the muzzle of a gun, the sleeve being provided with a threaded opening, and a nipple with an outer thread. having one end meshing in the second threaded opening for abutting against the outer end of the muzzle of a gun, the other end of the nipple'projecting from the sleeve for meshing in the threaded mea-ns for securing ofV the explosive gases rearthe sleeve 11 will be held i firmly 1n place relative to the gun barrel opening in the silencer to permit the silencer.
to turn home against the sleeve to accommodateI the adjustment of the sleeve rela tively to the gun barrel.
2. In an article of the class described, a sleeve having a longitudinal slot, a ban disposed across the slot, means for securing the ends of 4the band t o the sleeve, there being an inner thread in the outer end of the sleeve, and a nipple with an outer Vthread meshing with the thread in the sleeve for turning home against the muzzle of a gun disposed in the sleeve, the nipple projecting from the lsleeve-'for the purpose specified. j
3. In combination with a gun barrel hav- 'los a silencer having a v threaded opening, a sleeve having a longitudinal Aslot in which the projection 0n the gun barrel is disposed, a band disposed aoross the slot in the rear of the projection, means for securing the ends of the band to the sleeve, there being an inner thread in the outer end of the sleeve; and a nipple with an outer thread meshing With the thread in the sleeve and abutting against the end of the gun barrel, the outer end of y the nipple meshing inthe threaded opening in the silencer.
4. In combination with a gun barrel havinga sight and asilencer having a threaded opening, a sleeve, means for securing the sleeve to the gun barrel relativelyT to the sight, there being an inner -thread in the Copies of this patent may be obtained for silencer to permit the silencer to turn home against the sleeve to accommodate the adjustment of the sleeve relatively to the gun barrel.
.In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence 0I' two subscribing witnesses.
