Be it known that I, CHARLES F. HENDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Madisonville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

In the manufacture of caps there has been considerable difiiculty in forming a crown for the cap which is rounded in form. In hats of felt material, the rounded crown is, of course, put in by blocking, but in cloth caps as well it has been found necessary to put the goods on a blocking iron and stretch it, before permanent rounded form can be had. In the class of caps known as skull caps or jockey caps, a number of pointed triangular shaped pieces are sewed together with their points to the center, and the goods stretched over an iron to obtain a perfect rounded shape. Such a blocking of goods makes additional labor for the production of each cap, and adds considerably to expense of manufacture. Caps of cheap material for advertising purposes, cannot be made in rounded crown shape for this reason. There has been an effort to get away from this difliculty by making the cap of inverted sunbonnet shape, that is, with a crown piece and a crescent-shaped band partway around; but this cap is hard to size accurately. That is to say, this cap, as is also the case with a jockey cap, has to have more than one piece at the point where the sweat band is sewed, and as a result the size of the cap is likely to vary because of inaccurate joining of the several parts.

It is the object of my invention to construct a cap having a rounded crown, which can be made without blocking, requiring cutting and sewing only, and which has a band clear around for mounting the sweat band, and to provide for accurate sizes. This object is accomplished by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically pointed out and claimed.

with the crown partly toward the observer. Fig. I is a plan view of the principal parts of the cap taken before they are assembled.

The cap has a straight edge band 1, which. has the sweat band (not shown) at its lower inner edge, and it is sewed end to end at the rear of the cap. It can be readily appreciated that this band can be of exact size before sewing, and made up in large quantities, by machinery. Secured to this band in any desired way, it is preferred to have a vizor 2. The crown of the cap is the important feature, and is constructed in somewhat the manner of a base-ball cover. There is, thus, a central piece 3, with its side edges concave, and its end edges convex. There are two side pieces a and 5, each having a convex edge, to fit the concave edge of the central piece, and a convex edge on a like center to the convex ends of the central piece. I/Vhen the pieces 3, 4 and 5 are sewed together, their outer edges will be in approximately a circle and the central portions will bulge upwardly so as to form a rounded crown.

A small inaccuracy in sewing the pieces 8, 4 and 5 together will not disturbe the size at the sweat band edge of the straight edged hand 1, as the looseness in the rounded crown portion will allow some latitude in sewing which isnot detrimental to the appearance of the completed cap.

Owing to the conformation of the pieces, the bulging or rounded crown is provided without the necessity of blocking on an iron, because there are no straight seams as in a jockey cap, all seams being on convex o-r concave curves as described.

The cap may be made of fabrics which will receive stenciled or printed characters for advertising, and if desired the sections 3, 4c and 5 in the crown may be of different colors.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a cap, a vertical band around the cap, and a crown therefor comprising a plurality of pieces, cut with curved outer edges to fit the vertical band and stitched together along curved lines at the inner edges to form a rounded shape for said crown without blocking.

2. In a cap, a strip of material of the same rounded shape, said inner strip having its Width throughout, and stitched together for ends cut on a curve to fit the front and rear forming a band for the cap, and a rounded of the band.
