Application filed'llpril 23, 1915. Serial No. 23,312.
To all 1.072 0% it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY S. BOLLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county ofTarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chases for Printers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chases for printing presses, and more particularly to chases (for type) which are adjustable without knocking down the type and which can be shifted to any desirable position on the bed of the printing press and held rigid; and the object is to provide frames or false chases which can be mounted on the flat bed of the printing press and to provide type chases which may be mounted in such frames and adjusted and held rigid in different positions within said frames.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a' part of this application.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a cross-section, taken on the line w-a1 of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the se eral views.
A frame is provided which is a rectangular casting with sides 1 and 2 and top 3 and bottom 1. This frame is to be mounted on the flat bed of a printing press and constitutes a false chase. A type chase is mounted within the frame 123 l and consists of the bars 678-11 all cast in a single piece with extensions 12 and 13 cast integral therewith. The type chase is flush with the bottom of the frame 1234E and is to rest on the fiat bed of the printing press and is adjustable on bars 5 and 9. The bar 5 is passed through the bar 3 and through the extensions 12 and 13 and into (but not through) the bar 4 and may be made rigid with the bars 3 and 4. The bar 9 also passes through the bar 3, extensions 12 and 13 and into the bar 4. The type chase 67811 is slidable on the bars 5 and 9. The bar 9 has a rack 14 formed on the side thereof and a spring dog 10 is in serted in the end of the extension 12 and made secure therein and adapted to engage the teeth of rack 1-1 so that the frame or type chase 6 7811 can be held at any place desirable within the frame 1-231. It is preferable to make the bars 5 and 9 cylindrical because cylindrical openings can be easier made in thebars 8 and 4 and extensions 12 and 13 than rectangular or square openings. It is apparent that the two bars 5 and 9 will hold the type frame 6-7811 rigid at any position in which the type frame is placed thereon. These bars may be held in position by any suitable pins. The spring 10 may be provided with a handle 15 for convenience in releasing the same from the rack 14 for the purpose of adjustments.
hat I claim, is
1. A chase for printers comprising a rigid frame, bars mounted in the top and bottom bars of said frame, and a type chase consisting of a rigid frame having extensions on gaging said first mentioned bars and movable thereon.
2. A chase for printers comprising a rigid frame, bars mounted in the top and bottom parts of said frame, and a type chase consisting of a rigid quadrangular frame having extensions adjustably engaging said bars for holding the type chase at different positions in said rigid frame.
3. A chase for printers comprising a rigid frame, transverse bars passing through the top of said frame and into the bottom of said frame, a type chase consisting of a rectangular frame having extensions engaging said bars, and means in connection with one of said bars for holding said type chase at different positions within said rigid frame.
4. A chase for printers comprising a rigid frame having top and bottom and side frame pieces, a type chase mounted within said frame and consisting of a rectangular frame having extensions at one end, transverse bars engaging said top and bottom frame pieces and passing through said extensions, and means in connection with one of said bars for holding said type chase at different positions within said rigid frame.
5. A chase for printers comprising a rigid frame having top and bottom and side frame pieces, a type chase mounted within said frame and consisting of a rectangular frame having extensions at one end, transverse bars engaging said top and bottom frame pieces and passing through said ex- In testimony whereof, I set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses, this 17th day of April, 1915.
