UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
ANDREW B. LIDDELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PRESS-BED.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW B. LIDDELL, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Press- Beds', of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to the class of printing and more particularly to press beds and has for an object to provide a chase holder whereby a form may be set up in a convenient manner without the use of miscellaneous articles of t'urniture as is eonuuon in press beds of ordinary construction in connection with which chases of various sizes are used.
A further object of this invention is to provide means of the above described character which may be conveniently applied to or removed from press beds of various constructions.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the present invention showing the same in an operative position, Fig. 2 is an end view, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the racks, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking member, Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a press bed 5 comprising a bed member 6 of usual construction which is provided at its sides with cleats 7 and 8 respectively held to the bed by means of screws 9 or similar fastening devices. The bed G, upon its under side is provided with cleats 10 and l1, and the forward edge of the bed (i upon the under side thereof is also provided with a stop edge 12. A cleat 13 is disposed between the cleats 7 and 8 adjacent to their rearward ends, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed .Tune 23, 1908.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Serial No. 440,012.
inwardly of the cleats 7 and 8, there are shown rack bars lll each being provided with a plurality oit depending studs 15 disposed in recesses 1G formed in the bed plate, and these racks as shown in `Fig. 3 are also provided with openings 1T for the reception of fastening screws 18 engaged with the bed. The rack bars 1l are thus arranged to receive the reduced ends 19 of a cross bar 20. The reduced ends it) are disposed between the teeth of the rack and the bar 2() may be adjusted at dil'l'erent points upon the bed and is thus arranged to lie at all points of adjustment in parallel relation to a series of clamps as set :t'orth below.
A plurality of clamps 2i are carried by the bed at the end opposite the stop edge 13, and these clamps consist of pivotally mounted fingers 22 which are clamped to the bed plate (3 by means of screws Q?) provided with enlarged heads 24. The heads 2st are each provided wit-h a j )lurality ot' transversely disposed passages 25 for the reception of a suitable instrument whereby the screws may be cmiveniently manipulated.
In use, it will thus be seen that ay chase may be set. upon the bed (3 inwardly of the clamps previously described, and the bar 20 may be adjusted between the teeth of the rack members let for etlectively holding` the chase to the bed without the use of numerous and miscellaneous articles as used heretofore to till the space between the chase and the end of the bed.
that is claimed is z- A device of the class described comprising a bed plate having a pair of apertures adjacent to each of its sides, parallel spaced rack bars carried by the bed plate, depending studs carried by the rack bars and disposed in the apertures, fastening devices engaged with the rack bars and with the bed plate, form clamping means carried by the bed plate at one end thereof, and a removable locking member carried by the bed plate and having reduced end portions engaged between the teeth of the rack bars.
In testimony whereof I atlix my sigmlture, in presence of two witnesses.
