Be it known that I, FREDRICK J. SMITH, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for stereotyping, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in a stereotyping apparatus; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my new and improved stereotypecasting flask placed on an ordinary casting chair or frame, the flask being shown open and arranged for easting type-high six-column plates. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the flask thus arranged, the parts of the flask being closed and clamped together. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the closed flask, arranged for casting type-high single columns. Fig. 4. is a perspective view of the removable foot-pieces used in casting type-high single columns. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a piece of a six-column typehigh stereotype-plate made in-accordance with my invention. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a type-high single-column stereotype-plate, and Fig. 7 is a side view of one of the side bars used in casting six-column thin plates.
A represents the cope, and B the nowel, of the flask. These parts are hinged together by the adjustable hinges a a, composed of the slotted plates b b,'formed on the nowel, the eyeplates 0'0, formed 011 the cope, and the rod d, which passes through the plates 1) and c. The adjustment of the hinge is accomplished by means of the nuts e e on the eyebolts ff, that are placed on the rod (Z near its ends, and pass up through the perforated plates i 2 formed on the upper ends of the slotted plates 1) b. The cope A is formed with the edge flanges g g, for holding the core-plate O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or the core-plate D, as shown in Fig. 3, these plates being interchangeable iii'the cope. The nowel B is formed with holes near j j of the foot-piece F, (shown in Fig. 4,) and it is slotted at its forward or upper end, as shown at b b, Fig. 1,'for holding the forward or upper ends of the bars G G, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or for holding the side bars, H. (Shown in Fig. 7.) The rear or lower ends of the bars G G and the side bars, H H, are held in the notchesf and a, made in the foot-pieces E and F, as will be understood from the drawings and the following description: The coreplate Gin this instance is formed with six spaceribs, Z Z, and is used for casting the six-column type-high stereotype-plate J, (shown in Fig. 5,) while the core-plate D is formed with only five space-ribs, k, and is to be used for casting the the single-column type-high plates K. (Shown in Fig. 6.)
I11 casting the ordinary'thin stereotype-plates that are subsequently to be mounted upon blocks of wood with this flask, the coreplate G will be removed from the cope, side bars, H, will be put in the place of the bars G G, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) the hinges a a will be properly adjusted, and the matrix will be placed. upon the nowel between the side bars, and the flask closed, and the metal poured in the ordinary way. For casting the type-high sixcolumn plates J, the flask will be arranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the spaces between the ribs 2-1 of the core 0 serving to form the supporting-ribs 3" along the under side of the plate. In casting the type-high singlecolumn plates K, the core-plate D will be substituted for the core-plate O in the cope, the foot-piece F for the foot-piece F.- on the nowel, and the intermediate bars, G G, will be put in place, as shown in Fig. 3. Theseintermediate bars, G G, it will be seen, come, when the flask is closed, in the center of the spaces between the ribs 70 7c of the core-plate D, thus forming spaces on either side of the bars for making the ribs k 7.1 of the columns K, as will be understood from Fig. 3.
The advantages of theflask are obvious from the above description, and need not be further explained.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a stereotyping apparatus, the combination, with a nowel having its forward end slotted, of a foot-piece having its forward side notched and removably secured to the rear end of the nowel, and removable side bars engaging with the notches and slots of foot-piece and nowel, substantially as herein shown and described,
2. In a stereotyping apparatus, the combination, with nowel 13, provided with holes near its rear end, and the slots Z) at its forward end, of the foot-piece E, provided with the pins h and notches e, and the removable side bars G, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The slotted hingeplates b 1), formed on the nowel B, and having the perforated plates w '1 formed at their upper ends, in combination with'the eye-plates 0 0, formed on the cope, the rod cl and the eye-bolts ff, placed on the rod and passing up through the plates 2' i, and nuts (1 e on said eyebolts, for adjusting the hinge, substantially as set forth" FREDRIOK J.
