UNITED n STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT TURNER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
DIE HOLDER AND BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,143, dated April 20, 1897.
Application filed December 8, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LROBERT TURNER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Die Holder and Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to dies for stamping and embossing purposes; and its object is to provide a new and improved die holder or box arranged to hold separate dies forming the matter to be stamped or embossed, the dies being interchangeable to permit of setting up any desired matter.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is atransverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The improved die-holder is provided with a box A, having a bottom A, fixed sides A A a fixed end A and a removable end A engaging recesses in the fixed sides A A and held in place therein by suitable hinged catches B, as shown in the drawings.
In the box A, next to the fixed side A is arranged a false side 0, formed on its inside with a longitudinally-extending guideway D, and a similar guideway D is secured on the inside of the fixed side A The guideways D and D are adapted to be engaged by correspondingly-shaped recesses E, formed on the corresponding sides of the dies E, the said dies being passed upon the guideways through the open end of the box when the removable end A has been taken out.
If more than two rows of dies are used for the desired matter to be embossed or stamped, then such additional dies are placed between the dies on the guideways D and D, and as all the dies have longitudinal recesses E it is evident that the adjacent faces of the rows Serial No. 614,909. (No model.)
of dies have registering recesses adapted to be engaged by longitudinal bars F, so as to securely lock the rows of dies to each other.
\Vhen the box is filled with the dies, then the end A is placed back in position and locked therein by the catches B. The ends A and A are provided with longitudinally-extending set-screws H, which are now screwed up to engage the ends of the rows of dies, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1, so as to prevent the dies from moving lengthwise and for adjusting the dies so as to bring their reading or other matterin proper position. The false side 0 is then adjusted by set-screws G similar to the screws H and screwing in the fixed side A to securely clamp the dies laterally in place in the box. The faces of the dies extend a suitable distance above the box proper, so as to permit of proper printing, stamping, and embossing, as the case may be.
WVhen it is desired to set up different matter, some of the dies may be removed and replaced by others, according to the matter on hand.
It is evident that by the arrangement described the dies are interchangeable, so as to permit of setting up any desired matter from stock dies and new dies, if necessary, made for special purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A- die-holder comprising a box open at one end, a removable end piece set in said open end, catches to hold said end piece to the box, die-clamping devices held in said removable end piece and in the opposite side of the box, a false side arranged transversely of said removable end piece, said false side and the side of the box opposite to it being provided in their opposing faces with guideways for the dies, and a clamping device for pressing the false side toward the opposite side of the box, substantially as described.
ROBERT TURNER.
