Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EMIL DOMSGEN and FRIEDRICH LORENZ KUJAWA, merchants, subjects of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at 2 Alemannstrasse, Magdeburg, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Standing Matter, of which the following is a specification. I

The object of the invention is a holder for a standing matter that is, a device by means of which a lot of type which has been removed from the galley temporarily, is held together on the make-up table until ready to be locked into forms for use on the press, or for holding securely together a certain amount of type,'which has been taken out of the form and reserved for later use. Up to the present this has been accomplished by means of a string, which is tightly wrapped around the outside and made secure by turning under the ends or knotting.

A holder for matter according to the invention is shown in the drawing in a form of construction taken by means of example together with some unimportant alterations by means of which the holder can be adapted to special measurements.

Figure 1 shows the complete frame in the Fig. 2 a corner of this frame adjusted to hold a larger block of type. Fig. 3 the side view of the end of one of the bars showing grooves. Fig. 4 side view of the closing piece. Fig. 5 half of a frame with fast corners, but, as opposed to Fig. 1, the adjusting device placed on the side. Fig. 6 a corner fastener in which the grooves are out into the corner piece instead of in the side bars as in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 the side view of a bar constructed to correspond with the fastening device in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 the side view of this fastening device.

The device consists, therefore, of straight bars a and b, which are laid along the sides of the block of type formed by the standing matter and fastening devices 0; these are held together by a system of corresponding grooves e and ribs d thereby forming a rigid frame which holds the type compactly together. The grooves and ribs are dovetailed one into another to prevent slipping off at the side. The grooves and ribs are, however made absolutely vertical to the length of the various parts, so that either by drawing out or shoving in from the side, the parts may be detached. In the parts in which the grooves e are situated, whether in the side bars or corner pieces, is a series of consecutive grooves e, said grooves corresponding to the different lengths of the space line of the composing sticks. Through this arrangement it is not necessary to have the bars a b in all the various lengths, as any bar without difficulty may be adjusted to fit a larger block of type, whose dimensions are greater than the lengths of the bars them selves.

The operation of the device is the same in all the forms of construction shown, viz., that the bars are placed along the sides of the composition and the fastening pieces shoved in, which can be done without difficulty and loss of time.

What we do claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a contrivance for holding standing matter the combination of straight bars and connecting pieces bent at right angles, provided near their ends with dovetailed grooves and rectangular ribs extending over the whole breadth of said bars and connecting pieces and adapted to be fitted into each other as described and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a contrivance for holding standing matter the combination of straight bars having near their ends a series of dovetailed grooves extending over the whole breadth of the bar, with connecting pieces bent at right angles, having inside near each end a dovetailed rib adapted to be interlocked with any one of said grooves, all as described and shown.
