VARIABLE TURNING BAR.

This invention relates to adjustable turning bars.
An object of this invention is to provide a positively adjustable form of turning bar for printing presses and the like co-ordinated with folding and like supplemental machines for regulating the path of travel of the paper web.
In presses for newspaper printing and like impression operations, it has been-found desirable to locate the folding machines and like co-ordinated machines at an angle to the direction of travel of the web of the paper. It has been heretofore proposed to turn the course of travel of the paper web by means of a bar arranged angularly with respect to the path. of travel of the paper web from the printing or other press. However, in such prior proposals, such turning bar is not adjustably mounted nor co-ordinated with the alignment of the plates or equivalent of the printing or other units, and accordingly the absence of nicety of adjustment of. such turning bar has introduced the condition of non-registry of the paper web relative to the printing or other plates or the condition of non-registry of superimposed impressions on the paper web, or both of such defects.
Pursuant to the preferred form of my invention, the turning bar is mounted on a frame unitarily with or directly attached to the frame of the printing or other press, such turning bar being supported at a predetermined angle to the direction of travel of. the paper web through the printing or other press and usually at an angle of fortyiive degrees, such disposition being attained by providing for one end of the turning bar a substantially freely slidable support and providing at the opposite end of the turning bar a slidable support coupled with a rack enacting with a key carried by or to be inserted within a suitable housing of the sliding support, such key and such rack providing for the sliding of the turning bar to any desired adjusted position. with the most exacting degree as may be desired.
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following detailed description and the accmmnanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view showing one form of turning bar embodying my invention;

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the drawings comprises the turning bar 10 ad justably mounted as is set forth more particularly hereinafter relative to the oppositely disposed, side frames 11, 12. Such side frames 11, 12 may extend unitarily of the frame of the printing press or other impression machine or may be attached there to. The web of the paper delivered from the printing press or other impression machine is indicated at 13 and its direction. of. travel by the arrow 14. In the particular form of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the turning bar 10 is disposed at substantially the angle of forty-five degrees to the general direction of travel of the paper web 18 indicated by the arrow 14, and accordingly the passage of the web subsequent to transit about the turning bar 10 is substantially at right angles to its previous travel. The subsequent travel of the paper web is indicated at 15 and its directi on by the arrow 16. i
To attain the aforesaid and similar results, the turning bar 10 is provided with parallel sliding supports. One sliding support 17 may be in the form of a round bar, extending from and secured at its opposite ends to the side frames 11, 12 by means of the tapped bolts, 18, 19. The end 20 of the turning bar 10 is pivotally carried by the sliding block 21, provided with the opening 22 for slidingly receiving the bar 17. Such pivotal mounting may be by means of the headed pins 23, tapped screw or the like, freely passing through the smooth opening 24 in the end 20 of the turning bar 10, and tapped at its lower threaded portion 25 in the correspondingly threaded opening 26 of the sliding block 21. The head of the bolt 23 is preferably countersunk below the surface of the turning bar 10, as is indicated by the rovision of the enlarged opening 27. Prefera ly, the block 21 is formed to aflord of the slide supports 17 37 operations as may be desired. The tree passage of the paper web 13 above and below the turning bar 10 is afforded by the spacing for the opposite ends 20, 33 of the turning bar 10.
In lieu of a rack, any other suitable device having uniformly spaced teeth or equivalent elements may be employed and the key provided with corresponding teeth or like unitormly spaced elements; it will also be perceived that the key l0 may be arranged to be held permanently in position.
Whereas I have described my invention by reference to specific 'lorms thereof, it will be understood that many changes and modifications may from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a web printing'press, a turning bar for the paper web, a support for slidingly mounting one end of said turning bar, a second support spaced from said first-named support and slidingly mounting the opposite end of said turning bar, a rack carried by one of said supports, a casing carried by said turning bar and provided with an opening and a pinion rotatably received within said opening and coacting with said rack to adjustably position the two ends of said turning bar simultaneously relative to said two supports respectively.
2. In a web printing press, a. turning bar for thepaper web, a support for slidingly mounting one end of said turning bar, means for locking said one end of said turning bar at will at any desired position relative to said support, a second support spaced from said first-named support and slidingly mounting the opposite end of said turning bar, a rack carried by one of said supports, a casing carried by said turning bar and provided with an opening and a pinion rotatably received within said opening and coacting with said rack to adjustably position the two ends of said turning bar simultaneously relative to said two supports respectively.
In a web printing press, a turning bar for the paper web, a support for slidingly mounting one end of said turning bar, means for locking said one end of said turning bar at will at any desired position relative to be made without departing said support, a second support spaced from said first-named support and slidingly mounting the opposite end of said turning bar, a rack carried by one of said supports, a casing carried by said turning bar and provided with an opening, means for lock ing said opposite end of said turning bar at will at any desired position relative to said second-named support and a pinion rotatably received within said opening and coacting with said rack to adjustably position the two ends of said turning ously relative to said two tively.
4. In a web printing press, a turning bar for the paper web, a support for slidingly mounting one end of said turning bar, means for locking said one end of said turning bar at will at any desired position relative to said support, a second support spaced from said first-named support and slidingly mounting the opposite end of said bar, a rack carried by one of said supports, a casing carried by said turning bar and provided with an opening and a pinion rotatably and removably received within said opening and coacting with said rack to adsupports respecjustably position the two ends of said turn- U ing bar simultaneously relative to said two supports respectively.
5. In a web printing press, a turning bar for the paper web, a support for slidingly mounting one end of said turning bar, means for locking said one end of said turning bar at will at'any desired position relative to said support, a second support spaced from said first-named support and slidingly mounting the opposite end of said turning bar, a rack carried by one of said supports, a casing carried by said turning bar and provided with an opening, means for locking said opposite end of said turning bar at will at any desired position relative to said second-named support and a pinion rotatably and removably received within said opening and coacting with said rack to adjustably position the two ends of said turning bar simultaneously relative'to said two support-s respectively.
