Description

May 5, 1953 B. E. TEALE PAPERMAKING APPARATUS Filed June 21, 1950 Patented May 5, 1953 PAPERMAKING APPARATUS Benjamin E. Teale, Dalton, Mass.
Application June 21, 1950, Serial No. 169,352
3 Claims.
This invention relates to paper making apparatus and is directed more particularly to improvements in slice construction adapted for use in connection with the Fourdrinier wire of a paper machine.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of slice apparatus which is constructed and arranged in a novel manner so as to facilitate economy in manufacture and assembly and which may be readily and easily associated with a paper machine.
As a special feature of the invention the slice construction is adjustable back and forth so that stance another slice, head box or the like.
According to another novel feature of the ini the construction is such as to provide j so that the free edge of the slice plate may be adjusted relative to the Fourdrinier wire and the adjustment maintained.
To the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully de- M scribed and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of the bracket and slide arrangement of the slice construction of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevational view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevational view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
Elongated side plates are represented by 2 which may extend along the paper machine at opposite sides of the Fourdrinier wire.
Elongated plates t are secured to outer sides of plates 2 by any suitable means and are formed so as to cooperate with said plates 2 to provide elongated T-slots as shown, which are disposed horizontally. Brackets t are provided which are slidable along the members 4. Bolts having heads 8 in the T-slots extend through the brackets t and have nuts it on outer ends thereof for securing the brackets in adjusted positions.
The brackets t, as will appeansupport the slice structure and they may be secured to the side plates to locate the slice as may be desired relative to other units of the machine.
Boxes iii are adjustable up and down in the brackets t and adjusting screws M in threaded engagement with said brackets engage lower sides thereof to adjust the boxes up and down. Hand wheels it are fixed on the said screws l4 and locking members 18 are provided on said screws.
The boxes l'2 are split, as shown, and receive opposite end portions of a tubular support 20. Screws 22 in engagement with upper portions of the block l2 are provided for clamping the support 2c in the boxes and is provided with a manually engageable member 24.
Slice brackets 26 are provided on the support which are split, as shown. Screws 28 in engagement with said brackets are provided for clamping the brackets to the support and have hand wheels 30 for turning the same.
Keys such as 32 are associated with the support 20 and brackets 26, as shown. The brackets 26 may be moved along the support to adjusted positions and secured therein by the screws 28. A keyway 3 5 for the keys 32 may if de sired extend along the support 2t.
Relatively diverging arms 36 and 38 extend from the brackets 26. An elongated reinforcing member lit and a slice plate 42 are secured to the bracket arms 36 by bolts 44 or the like. The slice plate 42 will be formed from relatively thin sheet metal and the member it will be relatively more rigid to reinforce the upper edge of said plate 42.
Blocks it are secured to the lower marginal edge portion of the plate 42 and are arranged to provide slots therebetween, as shown. Adjusting screws 48 in the arms 38 of the brackets, have heads 50 disposed in said slots and hand wheels 52 are in threaded engagement with upper ends of said screws 68. Lock nuts 55 are provided on the screws 48 and are disposed in slots 55 provided in the outer ends of arms 38.
As will be seen the lower longitudinal edge of the plate 42 may be adjusted relative to the Fourdrinier wire by means of the screws at to obtain the desired functioning of the slice. The adjustment is secured by the lock nuts.
The longitudinal support may be oscillated in one direction or the other and secured in ad-- justed positions by the screw 22 whereby the angle of the plate relative to the Fourdrinier wire may be as desired.
' The brackets 6 and slice apparatus may be moved back and forth to locate the slice relative to other units of a paper machine as may be desired.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
