- being carried by the palette.
A further object is to provide a palette that is positive and efiicient in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, durable andthat is not likely to get out of order due chiefly to its simplified construction.
With the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this ap-. plication for patent and in which Fig. 1 is a view of the palette in elevation illustrating its application to .a stamping press I or machine.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of Fig. 1. i
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the palette.
Fig. 4 is a view of the palette in end elevation.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the palette in open position.
' Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of Fig. 3 but with the handle in an altered position.
Fig.7 is an end view of Fig.6 in an altered position.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentaryview of the handle.
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary perspective View 0 the alette in open or inoperative position. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary view of a slightly modified form of palette designed for application to a press of a somewhat different type.
Fig. 11 is a side view of Fig. 10.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the plunger of a gold stampin press or machine, the bore 2 thereof ad uStably receiving the threaded shaft 3 formed with a longitudinally extending groove 4 to receive the threaded pin 5 that extends through the plunger, the bevelled flattened end 6 of said pin being disposed in the slot 4 to prevent rotary movement of shaft 3, said pin 5 being provided with the handle 7. The shaft is retained in operative position in the plunger through the medium of brackets 8 secured to the plun er and in supporting-enga ement g with the ead 9 in threaded engagement with said shaft, a knurled thumb nut-10 also arranged upon the shaft serves to raise or 'lower the same in the plunger, asdesired. The shaft 3 at its lower end carries a female member or head 11 that receives the male member 12 arran ed upon one end of the post 13 that is carrie by the block" 14, said post being en aged by the locking screw 15 that extends t rough a bore in one end of the said block to prevent disengagement of the post from the block. The said block is formed along one lateral face with a deep oblique recess 16, and extending transversely of oneend of the block is the hinge pintle- 17 that extends-through bores in the lobes 18 of the carriage block 19. a set screw 20 extending through one end ofthe blocklfides against the said pintle to prevent rotation of the same as the carriage block is moved upon the hinge pintle relative to the block 14.
Screws 21 at one end of the carriage block 19 and similar screws 22 at the opposite end thereof, one of the screws 22 being provided with a washer 23, extend through the carriage block and into the'frame 24 of the typeholder which member is supported thereby, a spacer polnt 25 carried by the carriage being adapted to bear against the said frame 24 to space the sad members apart- A carriagehandle 26 is pivotally connected by one screw 22 to the carriage block and is formed with an elongated arcuate slot 27 to receive the other screw 22 whereby movement of" the handle in a given direction is limited. By "turning f the screws 21 and 22, or either of them,"the
space between the carriage block and frame 24 may be varied. Loosening of the screws 22 from any adjusted position is preverited by the set screws 28 that extend through one end of the carriage block into engagement with the screws 22.
The typeholder frame 24 is formed with a central partition 29 through which and.
through the ends of said frame the screw shaft 30 provided with the handles 31 ex tends, the threads of said shaft being relatiyely reversed upon opposite sides of said partition. Mounted upon the said screw shaft upon opposite sides of the partition 29 and slidable over a bar 32 of the frame and over a depending lip 33 are the type-engaging jaws 34 that are moved in relatively opposite directions, or toward and away from each other, by rotation of thesaid shaft 30.
The ends of the type, when set, are engaged by the said jaws 34, the top edge of the type is disposed against the bar 32 and one lateral face rests against the lip 33. An electric heater 35 is secured to the rear wall of the typeholder frame to heat the type held between the jaws to a proper degree to facilitate the printing operation.
In Fig. 1 the palette is in operative position to print were the jaws 34 provided with the type. One edge of the carriage handle 26 overlaps the blocks 14 and 19 so that relative movement of the carriage block is impossible. I type the handle 26 is moved out of engagement with the block-14 or into the position shown in Fig. 6 and the handle is now used to move the carriage block together with the typeholder upon the pintle 17 into the osition shown'in Fig. 5 when one edge 0 the handle 26 may be engaged in the recess 16 in the block 14 when the device will be caused to hold this position with the typ: so exposed. readily re-v between the jaws 34 that it can moved and new type inserted. At this time the handle 26 will be disengaged from the recess 16 and moved again to the operative position of the palette shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In Figs. 10 and 11 a slightly modified form of palette is shown for application to a press of a somewhat different type wherein the threaded shaft 3 terminates in an offset end-3" and the palette is then formed with an ear 36 for engagement with said end 3 and a set screw 37 is used to secure said members together as shown.
What is claimed is 1. In a. palette for gold stamping presses, a carriage blocl'r, a second block hinged thereto, a handle fulcrumed to said carriage block for movement into and out of engagement with saidsecond block a post fixedly secured to said second block, a threaded plunger shaft for releasably carrying said post, means for adjustably securing said plunger shaft to the press plunger, 'a typeholder, adjustable When it is desired to change the b to, a handle fulcrumed to said carriage block for movement into'and out of engagement with said second block whereby sald last named members may be locked in open or closed. position selectively, means for adjustably securing said second block to the press I plunger, a typeholder, adjustable connection etween said typeholder and carriage block whereby the former is supported in spaced relation to said carriage block, and a heater for said typeholder;
3.' In a alette for gold stamping presses, a carriage block, a second block hinged thereto, said second block being formed with a recess, a handle fulcrumed to said carriage block for movement across the face of said second block in one position of the same and for movement into the slotted portion thereof in a second position, means for adjustably securing the said second block tothe press plunger, a typeholder, adjustable supporting means for sald typeholder whereby it is held in spaced relation to said carriage block, and a heater for said typeholder.
4. In a palette for gold stamping presses, a carriage block, a second bloc k hinged there to, said second block being formed with,an edge recess, a handle fulcrumed to said carriage block for movement across the face of said second block in one position of the same and for movement into said recess in a second position, means for adjustably securing the said second block to the press plunger, a typeholder, adjustable supporting means for said typeholder whereby it is supported in spaced relation to said carriage block, and a heater for said typeholder.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature.
