m w W y I new dffitt WILLIAM HENRY GROVE, OF PHILADELPHIA. PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 114,435, dated May 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT m SEWING-MACHINE STANDS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, \VILLLLM HENRY Gnovn, of Philadelphia,
county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in SewingrMachine Stands or Cases, of which the following is a specification.
Nature and Object of the Invention.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is an end view of asewing-machine stand with my improvement.
Figure 2, a plan view of the same.
General Description.
My invention has been designed as a substitute for the drawers commonly used in connection with sewingmachine stands or cases, and which are objectionable inasmuch as in opening them they must be drawn outward from the front of the stand toward the operator, who must either adj ust her dress or move back or to one side to make way for the drawers.
"The arrangement which I have devised for overcoming, this objection consists of a number of trays or receptacles, A A A, 8150., suspended from or otherwise supported beneath the table B of the sewing-machine stand at one or both ends of the'sarne, and hinged at one corner or hung at any suitable point to a vertical pivot, a, so that any one or all of the said trays or receptacles may be turned so as to project outward from the table.
I prefer in most' cases to combine with these pivoted trays a frame or case, 0, secured to the under side of the table B, and having partitions d intervening between the trays, so that any one of the lat-termay be turned upon its pivot without bearing upon or having any tendency to move the rest.
Each of the trays when closed may be separately locked to the case 0, or a rod may be passed through all of the trays and the uppermost only be locked to the table B. 4
The trays, instead of being square or rectangular, as shown in the drawing, may be curved-on one edge, or be made of any other appropriate form, and the pivoted case may have drawers or compartments instead of trays.
My invention, it will be evident, can be applied as readily to the cabinet-cases of sewing-machinesas to open stands for the same, as a substitute for the usual objectionable drawers.
I do not claim, broadly, a series of cases arranged one above the other and turning on the same pivot, as this has been done before; but
I claim-- The combination, with a sewing-machine case or stand, of a tray or trays arranged so as to be turned outward from the end of the stand, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W. H. GROVE. Witnesses:
WM. A. STEEL, F. B. RICHARDS.
