COMBINATION MUSIC-DESK AND TABLE.
essrs.
Application filed November 20, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Louis E. NEWHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Framingham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Music-Desks and Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combination tables.
An object of my invention is to provide a table of simple construction which is adapted to be adjusted to serve several functions, that is, it may be used as a table or may be adjusted to serve as a music rack or copy holder whenever occasion requires.
Another object of my invention is to provide a combination table which has means connected thereto whereby a suitable illuminating means may be supported.
A further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable table which is easy and simple to operate and after the same has been operated it can be held in the operative .position by simple and inexpensive means as will be hereinafter described.
. With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my table.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tableshown in Fig. 1, same being adjusted so it can be used as a music rack or the like. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of my table as in the position as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a cross sectional view of my table as is shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the operating leaves showing how the same are operated. Fig. 6 is a detail view of a member used. Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the top of the table.
In the accompanying drawings which form a partof the specification, 1 designates suitable uprights which are connected together near the bottom thereof by means of the member 2, the said member extending Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915.
Serial No. 661,374.
into cutout portions which are formed in the uprights. The uprights 1 are connected together at their upper ends by means of a member 3, the said member 3 being provided with transverse grooves 1 for a purpose that will be described. The member 2 and the member 3 are provided near the center there of with apertures 5 and 18 whereby a tubular member 6 may be inserted therethrough for a purpose that will be described.
I provide the leaves 7 which are hingedly connected together as is shown at 8. Each of the leaves 7 is provided with longitudinally extending grooves 9 which cutout portions 9 have the strips 10 movably operable therein. The arms 11 are pivotally connected to the leaves 7 by means as shown at 12, the said arms 11 being slidably mounted in the cutout portions 1 of the member 3. For purpose of holding the arms 11 against upward movement when disposed within the cutout portions 4, I provide a plate 13 which is provided at each side with recesses 1d. The plate 13 is adapted to be secured upon the member 3 by any suitable means and the recesses 14 are adapted, for the reception of hinges 12, when the table is utilized as a music desk as is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. By having these recesses 14, the leaves 7 lie perfectly level when used as a table and when used as a music rack the connecting means 12 is seated therein and the leaves are held in the substantially upright position shown in Fig. 1.
Connected to the tubular member 6 and preferably at the top thereof is the rod 15 which supports a suitable illuminating means as shown at 16. The leaves 7 are provided on their proximate edges and midway their ends with semi-circular recesses 17, which when the leaves are engaged provide a central opening through which the member 6 engages. The plate 13 is provided with an opening 18 through which the memher 6 likewise engages.
In the operation of my device, when the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1, it serves as a suitable table. When it is desired to adjust my invention to form a music rack the hook 19 which holds the proximate edges of the leaves 7 when the device is used as a table is unlatched and slight pressure is applied to each side of the leaves 7 where by the inner side of the leaves will be forced upwardly on the tubular member '6 and the arms 11 will slide slowly in the transverse grooves 4: until the connecting means 12 is seated in the cutout portions 14:. v
I desire to lay great stress upon the simplicity of my device and from the foregoing it is thought that the advantages and novel features of the same will be appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention provided such changes fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combination music desk and table including supporting legs, plates provided with transverse grooves carried by said legs, leaves hingedly connected together, straps pivotally engaged with the inner faces of said leaves and having sliding engagement in said grooves, and'a rod centrally mounted in said cable and extending upwardly through said leaves substantially as specified.
2. I11 a device of the character described, uprights, means connecting said uprights near their lower ends, means connecting the tops of said uprights, said last named means being provided with transverse grooves, a tubular member extending through said first and second named means, leaves hingedly connected together and in slidable engagement with said tubular member, arms pivotally connected to each of said leaves, said arms adapted to be seated in said grooves, a plate adapted to be secured to said last mentioned connecting means, said plate provided with grooves, said arms adapted to slide within said grooves whereby said leaves may be adjusted for the purpose specified.
