PAUL .A. BEYNEBI, OF BROKEN BOW, NEBRASKA.
END-GATE FASTENER.
Application filed March 15, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL A. REYNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Broken Bow, in the county of Custer, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in end gates for wagons, and particularly to latches therefor.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap device for holding the parts of a sectional end gate in proper extended position.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and effective in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of an end gate having my improved latch mounted thereon, Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the latch, the casing being broken away, Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section on the line 38 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the latch.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 and 11 represent the hinged sections of an end gate, the section 11 of which has secured thereto, the usual tongue or extension 12 which projects across the face of the other section and is provided with a slot 13 which receives a staple 14: carried by the section 10. Mounted on the upper face of the extension, and over the slot 13 is a casing 15, the same being secured to the extension by screws 16 passed through the ears 17. Through one end of the casing is passed a pointed pin 18 which is driven Specification of Letters Patent.

into the extension and assists in holding the casing to the extension; Pivotally mounted on this pin is an arm 19, the same extending through an opening 20 in the other end of the casing. Extending downwardly at right angles from the free end of the arm is a lug 21 which is engaged through the staple 14 when said staple is projected through the slot of the extension. On the upper side of the arm above the lug is a longitudinally directed finger piece 23 by means of which the arm can be raised to release the lug from the staple. A spring 24-. is secured to the upper wall of the casing and bears on the upper side of the arm to normally force the same in lowered position. It will be noted that the finger piece rests on one of the at taching ears so that the arm is limited in its downward movement.
What is claimed is:
A latch for an end gate comprising a casing having attaching ears secured to a portion of the gate and having an opening in the upper portion at one end thereof, a pin passed through the opposite end of the casing and into the end gate, an arm pivotally mounted on the pin and extending to the other end of the casing, a depending lug on the arm at the free end thereof, a longitudinally and outwardly directed finger piece carried by the upper side of the free end of the arm and extending through the said opening of the casing, said finger piece normally resting on one of the attaching ears, and resilient means for normally urging the arm in lowered position to be supported by the engagement of the finger piece with the ear.
In testimony whereof, I afix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
PAUL A. BEYNER.
Witnesses:
