Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 19, 1915. Serial No. 9,295.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN H. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and ImprovedSafety and Sanitary Envelop, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
A prime object of my invention is to provide-a mailing envelop the contents of which will be protected without the necessity of sealing or gumming the closing flap of the envelop.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastening means for the closing flap composed of co-acting elements which may be engaged with facility and which will involve the minimum cost of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the more particular description 7 following.

Figure 1 is a rear view of an envelop embodying my invention, the closing flap being open; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on a larger scale, the envelop being in closed condition; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the envelop blank.
In forming an envelop in accordance with my invention, a blank, Fig. 3, is provided having 'a central front panel or, end flaps b, c, a bottom or back flap-e, and closing flap (Z. The end flap 1) is extended at its upper edge to provide folds 6 Z2 defined by score lines 10, 11, the said folds being of irregular shape presenting in the blank form widened outer ends and narrow inner ends, the score lines 10, 11, being divergent from the inner ends outwardly. The opposite end flap 0 is similarly formed, having corresponding folds c 0 defined by score lines 12 1s. sealing lip b having gum is provided. With the envelop blank thus formed the ends 6, 0, are turned inwardly and folds b 6 are turned downward at the inside of the envelop with the sealing lip b overlapping the adjacent edge of the flap 0 of the opposite end, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A transverse .slot h is formed in the flap d adjacent and parallel with the inner layer f, so that the said slot will be below the said inner layer 7 when the fiap d is turned down to the closed position, as in Fig. 2, and as hereinafter further explained. I use the expression inner as applied to the layer ofmaterial 7 because Patented J nine 8 1915 it is disposed between the flap d and the layer 9.
A co-acting fastener element j is secured to the body of the envelop at the upper edge of the back. The said fastener element is formed from thin sheet material such as celluloid, similar to the layers 7, g- The fastener element 7' is secured by any suitable paper fastener 70' having the ends passed through the back 6 near the upper end thereof and through the adjacent portions of the folds b 0 The upper end of the fastener element j projects above the back 6 and is provided with tongues Z preferably two, in
vertical alinement, said tongues being disposed downwardly.
It will be seen that the closing flap (Z may be entered as in Fig. 2 in the pocket formed by the described folds b b 0 0 and the back 6. When the closing flap'd is thus turnedinto the pocket of the envelop with the contents m adjacent the front panel a,
the slot h in the said closing flap will be in positionto permit the upper projecting end of the fastener element 7' to be passed forwardly through the said slot 76 and between theinner and outer layers f, g ofthe'mating With the element j entered to the fullest extent between the layers 7 fig, one or the other of the locking tongues Z will be above the upper edge of the stiff material 9 according to the thickness of the contents m of the envelop, so that said upper edge of the element 9 will be engaged by one or the other of the locking tongues Z and prevent the withdrawal of the fastener element j.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An envelop having a fastener element on the body of the envelop at the upper edge of the back and projecting beyond the said upper edge, the envelop having end flaps provided with folds forming with the back of the envelop a V-shaped pocket, the upper projecting end of the said fastener element having locking tongues in vertical series at the inner side thereof disposed in a downward direction, and a co-acting fastener element on the closing flap of the envelop at the inner side thereof, the second fastener element having overlapping inner and outer layers of stiff sheet material, the said layers being fastened together and to the closing flap and said closing flap having a slot adjacent to the edge of the inner layer, the said two overlapping layers of sheet material affording a passage therebetween to permit the projecting end of the first fastener element to pass beneath the inner layer and project beyond the upper edge of the outer layer when the flap is in the closed position, the said upper edge of the outer layer forming a catch to engage a tongue in the first fastener element.
