JOHN F. SMIEJA, or ROYALTON, MINNESOTA.
HARNESS-BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1, 1915.
' Application filed July 8, 1914. Serial No. 849,794.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. SMIEJA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Royalton, in the county of Morrison and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harness-Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a buckle which is susceptible of use in a variety of ways for connecting straps to admit of ready adjustment as may be required without making it necessary to manipulate latches, tongues, or like parts which at times and under certain conditions make it practically impossible to secure the V desired adjustment.
The invention provides a buckle which may be used with cross lines when driving a team or which may be employed in connection with harness generally to admit of various adjustment of straps to meet the re quirements arising when it becomes necessary to adjust the harness to meet conditions out of the ordinary. V
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combina- 7 tion of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached :Fig-
ures 1 and 2 are obverse and reverse plan views of a harness-buckle embodying the invention. Fig. 3 is an edge view showing the buckle used for connecting two straps. Fig. .4 is a longitudinal section showing the buckle having one strap in position and formedinto a loop for engaging a linker other analogous part.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The buckle preferably comprises an in tegral frame which is light, strong, and compact. The buckle frame is' oblong and somewhat flat and its end portions are of similar construction. The buckle frame comprises longitudinal members 1 and a plurality of cross bars connecting end portions of such longitudinal members. The cross bars 2 and 2* are located at opposite ends of the frame and upon opposite sides thereof. The
cross bars 3, l, and 5 are arranged upon the same side of the buckle frame as the cross bar 2, whereas the cross bars 3*, a, and 5 are located upon the opposite side of the buckle frame and at the opposite end thereof and upon the same side as the cross bar 2 The strap or straps to be attached to the buckle are passed between the longitudinal members 1 and back and forth between the cross bars, such flexing of the strap or straps serving to retain them in the adjusted position.
Fig. 4 shows one manner of applying a single strap to the buckle, an end part of such strap being passed between thelongitudinal members 1 and the opposite cross bars at one end of such longitudinal members and between the opposite cross bars at the opposite end of the longitudinal members, such end portion of the strap being bent upon itself to form a loop 6 and being passed back'and forth over the cross bars 3, 4c, and 5 with the loose end of the strap passing between the cross bars at the opposite end of the buckle. In the application shown in Fig. 3, the end portions of the two straps are passed back and forth between the cross bars 3, 4., and 5 and 3 4 and 5 thence through the opposite end portion ofthe frame and between the cross bars at such end.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A harness buckle comprising a pair of spaced members rectangular in cross section forming the sides of the buckle, four spaced cross bars secured to the lower edges of the said members, three of which being arranged in close relation and in close proximity to In testimony whereof I affix my signature one end of the buckle, and four spaced cross in presence of two Witnesses. 7
bars secured to the upper edges of said JOHN F. SMIEJA. members, three of which being arranged in Witnesses: V 7 V 75 close relation and in close proximity to the G. O .'SCHAEFER,
remaining end of the-buckle;- I 'A. BARTON.
