BUCKLE.
To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, JOHN STURRooK, a subject of the Kingof Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of" Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Buckles; and I do hereby declare'the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
I This invention relates to buckles specially adapted for use in connection with straps of cotton 1 and other similar material; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings,-Figure l is a side view of a buckle constructed according to this invention, showing a broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the buckle, taken on the line az-w in Fig. 2.
The side bars 2 of the buckle are preferably curved or angle-shaped so that their middle parts project above the level of their ends. An anchor-bar 3 is secured crosswise between the side bars at one end, and a defleeting bar 4 is secured crosswise between the side bars at the other end. The side bars have slots 5 in them which extend longitudinally from the deflecting bar 4 to about the middle of the side bars, and the side bars are thickened around these slots to make them sufliciently strong.
A shaft 6 is j ournaled loosely in the slots 5, and is provided with a radially projecting tongue 7 at its middle part between the side bars and opposite the deflecting bar 4. A collar or button 8 is secured on one end portion of the shaft which projects from the side bars; and a finger-piece or knob 9 is secured on its other end portion. This finger-piece is marked with the word Top 0n the side of it which comes uppermost when the tongue projects toward the lower side of the deflecting bar, as shown in Fig. 8, but the buckle may be marked in any other approved manner.
The upper surface of the tongue when in this position is slightly concave, and a projection 10 is formed by the extension of the tongue across the shaft on the other side of the shaft from the main portion of the portion of the strap Specification of Letters Patent. Patent ed J Application filed September 20, 1915. Serial No. 51,575. I
tongue. This projection issimilar to the main portion of the tongue but is shorter than the mainrportion. The strap 12 which is preferably formed of cotton or other textile material is secured at one end to the anchor-bar 3, and its other end portion is passed upwardly from'below over the top of the tongue and its shaft and downwardly under the deflecting bar 4. The free end portionla of the strap is pulled upon to tighten the strap, and when sufliciently tightened the tension of the strap and the friction of its rough woven surface enables the tongue 7. to hold it from slipping.
The tension of the strap pullsthe tongue shaft forwardly in the slots; toward the deflecting bar, the strap 1 being tightly gripped between: the. tongue and .crossbarx- When the strap is to be removed, the tongue shaft is revolved by thefinger-piece in the direction of the curved arrow in Fig. 3. This retracts the free end portion of the strap, and releases the tension of its main portion so that the tongue shaft can be slid toward the anchor-bar and. the strap released from the tongue. lVhen the strap is to be tightened, the finger piece and shaft are turned in a direction opposite to that of the arrow shown in Fig. 3, and after every complete rotation of the shaft the strap is automatically gripped between the. tongue and cross bar.
While I have described and illustrated in this application one form of my invention, it is, of course, to be understood that the embodiment shown and described herein is used for the purpose of illustration and may be modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A buckle provided with side bars and cross bars connecting theends of the same, said side bars having registering slots extending at one end in close proximity to one of said cross bars, and a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said slots and having a flattened tongue located between said side bars and in close proximity to one of said cross bars whereby the strap employed may be tightened by rotating said tongue.
2. In a buckle, side bars having longitudinal slots therein substantially parallel with the upper and lower edges thereof, cross bars connecting the ends of said side bars, and a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said slots and provided between said side bars with a flattened tongue Whereby the strap employed may be tightened by rotating said tongue.
3. A buckle provided with side bars and cross bars connecting the ends of the same, said side bars having registering slots extending at one end in close proximity to one of said cross bars, a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said slots and having a flattened tongue located between said side bars and in close proximity to one of said cross bars, and means mounted on one end of the shaft for revolving it manually.
a. A buckle having an open substantially rectangular frame provided with side bars and cross bars connecting the same, said side bars having longitudinal slots therein extending at one end in close proximity to one of the cross bars, said cross bars and slots being located substantially in the same plane, and a flattened tongue rotatably and slidably mounted in said slots whereby the strap employed may be tightened by retating said tongue.
5. A substantially open rectangular buckle provided with side bars having longitudinal slots therein, cross bars between and con- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the neoted with the end portions ofthe side bars and located beyond the ends of said slots, a transverse shaft rotatably mounted in and movable longitudinally of said slots and located adjacent to one of the cross bars, said shaft having a laterally projecting tongue portion located between the side bars, and means for rotating the shaft.
6. A buckle having side bars, cross bars connecting the ends of the same, registering longitudinal slots in said side bars, a shaft mounted in said slots rotatable through 360 and provided intermediate the said side bars with a concave tongue, and means on said shaft for manually rotating the same.
7. A buckle having side bars, cross bars connecting the ends of the same, registering longitudinal slots in said side bars extendlng at one end in close proximity to one of said cross bars, and a shaft mounted in said slots rota-table through 360 and'provided between said side walls with a flattened portion adapted to cooperate with one of said cross bars to clamp a strap therebetween,
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
