ABEL IVI. JOSTAD, OF WEST SALEM, WISCONSIN.
BOLSTER.
Maasai.
Application filed January 13, 1915.
To all 'LU/Om t may concern Be it known that I, ABEL M. JosTnD, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Salem, in the county of La Crosse and State of `Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolsters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bolsters and more particularly to what will be hereinafter known as an adjustable bolster, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a bolster provided with adjustable end pieces whereby the bolster may be readily lengthened when desired and to provide the body of the bolster with means for retaining the adjustable members in their various adjusted positions.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a bolster of the above character which will possess advantages in points of eiiiciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bolster constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the adjustable bars; and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates a bolster which may be formed of any suitable material but preferably of metal and is secured to a sleigh, wagon or any other vehicle by means of the pins 2. The bolster 1 is provided upon opposite sides of the center thereof with longitudinal openings 4 and movably disposed within these openings are adjustable bars 5, each of said bars being provided upon one of its longitudinal edges with suitable recesses 6 adapted to receive a locking means to retain the bars in various adjusted positions.
The locking means heretofore mentioned consists of a single rod disposed upon the Specication of Letters Patent.

mit of the adjustment of the same. The rod y then extends from the loop and is bent into U-shape form to provide a retaining loop 10, the end of which loop is disposed at right angles to form a locking pin 11 which is movable within an opening 12 in the bolster so that the inner end thereof will engage within any one of the recesses 6 to lock the bar 5 in an adjusted position. The locking member is securely held in its eective position by means of a transverse pin 13 which extends through a hasp 14 which the loop 10 is adapted to straddle. From this it will be apparent that the locking member will be securely held against lateral movement.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent that l have provided a simple and durable bolster which can be attached to sleighs, wagons or any other similar vehicles and is so constructed that the same may be readily lengthened, when desired, so as to eliminate the necessity of providing a separate rack for the conveying of logs, cut lumber or other similar material, wherein a specially constructed rack is necessary for conveying a large load of said timber. lt will be readily apparent that when it is desired to lengthen the bolsters, the locking pin 13 is removed from the loop 14 and the handle 9 grasped, so as to disengage the end 11 of the locking member from the recesses 6, so that the movable bars 5 can be readily pulled outwardly to any desired position in accordance with the length of bolster required.
Secured to the outer ends of the bolster and to the adjustable bars 5, are the upright pins which form suitable stops or side braces for the articles which are mounted upon the bolsters to prevent lateral movement of the same while being loaded.
As shown in the accompanying drawing, the openings 4 and the bars 5 extend the entire length of the bolster so that the bars may be relatively adjusted to any desired position. It Will also be apparent that my improved bolster, as herein shown and described, is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively loW cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of'my invention, it Will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, Without sacriiicing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
IIaving thus described this invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bolster including a bodyprovided with transversely spaced, longitudinally eX- tending openings disposed in the same horizontal planey with each other, an adjustable bar movable through each opening, said bars being of a length equal to the length of the bolster, and fastening means for securing the bars in adjusted position.
Copies of this patent may be obtained foi" ive cents 2.,.A, bolster includingla body having a longitudinally extending opening, a bar Y position, said means consisting of a resilient latch formed from a single length of resilient Wire and secured at one terminal to the sidc face of thebody and bent intermediate its length to produce a convolution Which serves as a finger-ring whereby the fastening device may be releasedto permit the adjustment of the bar and a right-angularly directed pin `which is disposed for movement in the body member and into engagement Withthe bar, a` loop portionco'nnecting the pin andconvolution, a hoop,l secured to `the body, and a pin insertible through the hasp for holding the loop portion thereon, yvhereby the` i'sheld against Withdrawal from thebody. 4
In testimony whereof I hereuntoaflix my signature in thepresence of two Witnesses.
