T. W. BARRY.
HOLDBAGK FOR VEHICLES.
No. 386,179. Patented July 17, 1888.
@www @7 UNITED STATES PATENT Eric THOMAS V. BARRY, OF MANISTEE, MICHIGAN.
HOLDBACK FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 386,179, dated July 17, 1888.
Application iiled February '7, 1557. Serial No. 226,857. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS \V. BARRY, of the city and county of ManiStee,State of Michi gan, have invented an Improved Thill-Lock and Holdback-Adjuster, to be attached to the thills of buggies, carriages, wagons, and other vehicles; and I do dfcare that the following is a true, aecurate, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective of my invention attached to a thill, showing holdback strap in position. Fig. 2 shows rear end view. Fig. 3 shows side view. Fig. 4 shows front end view. Fig. 5 shows the under side, giving full view of the face of the slide screw-holes and bolt-holes. Fig. 6 shows the upper side, giving view of thill-lock as sliding on edges of' the plate-slide. Fig. 7 is a sectional view showing bolt in position. Fig. 8 is also a sectional view showing bolt lifted out.
My said invention consists of a device to be fastened on the undersideof a thill of abnggy, carriage, wagon.or other vehicle, being a metal slide, A B, in Fig. 3, of the length of fourteen inches or other length desirable, to be firmly screwed to the wood, and having beveled edges C D, as shown in end view, Fig. 4, along and upon which slides freely the thill-lock and keeper E F, said slide having holes through it. b b Z b, Fig. 5, to receivethe pin or bolt G H, Fig. 7, ofthe thill-loek.
The slide A Bisso made at the Yforward end that the lock can be passed off' freely and quickly when the bolt is released, and at the back end is made with a slight lip or projection, a, so that the lock cannot be removed in that direction.
rEhe thill-lock and keeper (represented best in Figs. 7 and S) consist of a small metal earriage with staple or eye K to receive strap, all so made as to pass upon and fit snugly to the slide by a deep groove or way made so as to exactly fit the beveled edges of the slide C D, Fig. 4, already described.
lhe keeper K is a simple metal eye ofproper size and shape on the forward end of the lock and made part of it. The lock, Figs. 7 and 8, including the keeper, is arranged with a thumb-piece or lever,L L,Figs. 7 and S, which acts upon the bolt or pin G H, Fig. 7,and lifts it perpendicularly out of its hole, releasing the lock and allowing it to be moved Yforward or back. The th umh-piece or leverL L, Figs. 7 and S, enters a slot in the pin G H, Fig. 7, and is wide at its extremity (shown by dotted lines at M, Fig. 7) and narrowed at the shoul der, where it leaves the pin G H, in said Fig. 7, and with its shoulders O, Fig. 8, rounded or beveled off', by all of which peculiar construction said bolt or pin is lifted directly out on astraight line. Under the thumlrpiece or lever is a straight stiff steel spring, P P, Figs. 7 and S, which holds the bolt or pin firmly in its place by pressing hard against the level'. lThe pin or bolt G H, Fig. 7, is a straight metal bolt of proper size, reaching through the lock and through the holes in the slide A B, as shown in Figs. 7 and S. It is worked by the thumb-piece, before described, and its use is to lock the whole thill-lock and holdbaek-adjuster firmly in its place wherever adjusted on the slide.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is-w l. The combination, with the slide having beveled edges and a series of openings or depressions in its length, of the thilllock provided with a keeper embracing the edges of the slide, the pin adapted to move at rightangles to the slide, and means for moving the pin, substantially as and for the purpose de scribed.
2. The combination, with the slide and the thill-loek -provided with a keeper placed on and adapted to be adjusted on the said slide, of the pin constructed to move at right angles to the slide, and the lever pivoted between its ends and having its forward end engaging with the said pin, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with the slide and thill-loek, of' the pin having a slot in its side, and the lever having its inner end fitting in the slot and having its other end expanded to form a thnmbrest, and the spring, substantially as and f'or the purpose specified.
4l. The combination, with the slide having undercut edges and having a stop formed at one end, as shown, of the thill-loek embracing the edges of' the slide and limited in its movement by the said stop, substantially as in the pin and the other end expanded to form lset forth. a thumb-rest, substantially as and for the pur- 1o 5. The herein-described device, composed pose described. y of the slide having beveled edffes and a stop at one end, the thilI-lock embrzcing the edges THOMAS W' BARRY' of the slide and provided with `a keeper, the Witnesses: slotted pin adapted to travel in astraightline, A. V. MCALVAV, and the lever having one end fitting in the slot H. BECKER. p
