Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWARD HOUSTON, a subject of the King of England, residing at London, in England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polishing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises improvements in, or relating to, polishing devices or implements of the kind wherein means are provided for holding the polishing fluid and applying same to surfaces, more particularly floors, linoleums and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide such a polishing implement with improved means for holding and discharging the polishing fluid whereby the same may be applied to the surface in a more convenient and simple manner than has hitherto been proposed.
In accordance with my invention, the improved polishing implement is provided with a device consisting of a holder or receptacle, such as a tin canister or the like, containing the polishing fluid. The holder is mounted to rotate or rock about a pivot and is operable by a cord, spring or other suitable mechanism under the control of the operator, said device being suitably attached to the polishing implement, for example, to the handle thereof, and the receptacle being preferably provided with a sprinkler top or discharge nozzle. The device is operated by pulling the cord, this action rotating or rocking the holder about its pivot and bringing the discharge end of the receptacle downward, thus allowing the polishing fluid to escape and fall onto the surface under treatment. Upon releasing the cord, the holder is automatically returned to its original position as by a helical spring or other appropriate means. f
A further object of the invention is to combine, with said polishing fluid applying means, a form of hand polishing implement which may consist of a head provided with two rubbing surfaces or faces secured together at an angle say of 900, said head being attached toa handle in such a manner that one surface may be caused to rub the polishing fluid over the surface under treatment and by reversing the implement the second surface may be used to polish said surface. The fluid applying device may be attached by a clamp, or otherwise, to the lower end of the handle of said polishing implement.
An embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing the polishing fluid applying device combined with a hand polishing implement. Fig. 2 is a sectionon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the means for manually tilting the receptacle being `omitted in the interest of clearness. Figs. 3 and 4 are elevational views, from opposite sides, of details of the improved fluid applying device, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the polishing head of the implement.
In Figs. 1 to 4, a indicates a rotatable disk, al a pin or pivot by which said disk a is mounted on a fixed disk b, the latter being secured to the handle d by a clamping device f attached to said disk b by eyes b3, and secured to the handle by a bolt and nut f1. The disk Z) has in its periphery a segmental cut away portion indicated by b1,
the ends b4 of which form abutments or shoulders adapted to be engaged by an eye a2 on the disk a to limit the movement thereof in both directions.
0 indicates a helical spring attached at its opposite ends to the disks a and respectively, by eyes c and o2, and Z1 designates a cord which passes through eyes d2 on the handle and is attached to the eye a2 of disk a. In Fig. 2 the operating cord d1 is omitted for sake of clearness.

The improved fluid applying device is attached to the handle d of the polishing implement by the clamping device shown in Fig. 2, the holder e being shown as attached to disk a by the means described, and e1 indicates the bottom of said holder attached to one side thereof by a wire hinge e2 and sesured to the opposite side of said holder by a wire hasp and staple e3.
g indicates a receptacle containing the polishing fluid, and g1 the discharge nozzle thereof. The cord Z1 passes along the side of handle d through the eyes d2 and terminates in a ring d3, by which it may be operated.
The lower end of handle d may be secured within a slot 71.1 in a block h by a pin or pivot 71,2, and attached to said block are two boards i and j secured together at an angle of 90 by screws, one of which, 7c, is shown. The boards are attached to the block h by screws, two of which are indicated by 762 and are completely covered externally by a felt pad or the like indicated by Z, the broken lines Z1 indicating an additional, detachable and renewable polishing cloth or cover, both of which coverings may be attached to the head of the polishing implement by any suitable means such as tacks, pins or the like.
In Fig. 5 the felt pad Z is shown folded over the sides and ends of the boards z' and y' and attached thereto.
It' will be understood that the improved fluid applying device may beattached to any suitable form of polishing implement in any required manner, also that it may be desirable to vary the form of the device or the :mechanism described for operating same,y such variations being readily suggested by the requirements of' the particular object in view.
It will also be understood that the holder need not necessarily be in the form of a Wire frame, but may be constructed in any suitable manner, or the holder may form Ithe receptacle for containing the polishing fluidy and may be detachably connected to the rotatable disk by any suitable means.
VThe device is operated in the manner described above to deposit a quantity of polishing fluid from the receptacle on to the floor, and, in the case of a polishing implement of similar construction tothe example shown in F ig. l, the fluid is rubbed over the surface under treatment by one face of the implement which is then reversed `and the polishing operation completed by the second face.
What Iclaim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is :f

A polishing device of the character specied comprising a receptacle for polishing fluid, astationary member adapted for attachment to a polishing implement, and having a peripheral depression forming shoulders at its ends, an axially rotatable member carried by said fixed member and serving as a support for the receptacle, a liexible member for operating the rotatable member in one direction, a spring adapted to return said rotatable member to normal position and an abutment on said rotatable member adapted to engage the shoulders on the stationary member for limitation of its rotary movement in both directions.
2. A polishing device of the character specified comprising a' receptacle for polishing fluid, an axially rotatable member, a
lholder for said receptacle secured to said rotatable member, means for rotating the latter to cause discharge of a quantity of a fluid from the receptacle directly on to the surface to be polished and means for automatically returning the rotatable member, holder and receptacle to normal position after a discharging operation.

holder and receptacle to normal position on release of the cord, and a pin on the rotatable member adapted to engage the aforesaid shoulders on the stationary memberto limit the movement of rotation ofsaid rotatable member inwboth directions.
l. In a device of the class described, the combination with a polishing implement provided with a handle, of a rotatable holder mounted on said handle, said holder being adapted to-detachably support a container of conventional type, meansfor norspecification in the presence of two witnesses.
