(Cl. 15-258) The present invention relates to an improved shoe polishing device which combines as a hand conveniently operable unit a shoe brush, a polish distributing dauber, a bufling cloth, a pressure packed container of a semiliquid shoe polish, and which performs the operations of cleaning the shoe, applying the polish, distributing the polish on the shoe, brushing the polish to a shine, and then butting it to a gloss, all with one unit in one sequence of operations which are performed without releasing the unit from the palm of the hand.
Among other objects of the invention, the unit has a shoe brush and a dauber brush mounted on one plane of a base plate and a pressure packed container of shoe polish mounted on the opposite plane of the base plate, said container being concealed by a casing over which a bufing cloth is extended. The base plate is rotatably mounted on the interior of a handle formed cover, having a knob on the exterior for rotating said base plate and thereby exposing either the shoe brush and the dauber brush, or the bufiing cloth, a nozzle extending from the polish container and protruding through the cover, and a control member for conveying the polish from the container directly onto the shoe to be polished.
These together with various ancillary features and objects of the invention which will later become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this device, a preferred embodiment of which has been illustrated by way of example only in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shoe brush;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view;
Figure 3 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view of Figure 1, with the cover removed, showing in top plane the upper section of the shoe brush, and a cut away portion so as to show the polish container;
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the cover of Figure 1, showing the interior arrangement;
Figure 5 is an end View particularly illustrating the device with the butting cloth exposed for use;
Figure 6 is a front view particularly illustrating the device with the shoe brush exposed for use;
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view illustrating the lock and release mechanism of the cover,.the section being indicated by line 77 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings, the shoe polishing device of the present invention comprises a base plate 10 having extending from one plane in its forward position, bristles preferably arranged in a circular form constituting a dauber brush 12 for distributing the polish and having on the major portion of the same plane tufts of bristles 14 embedded to form a polishing brush 16; on the opposite plane of said base plate 10, seated in a groove 18 and held in place by-a casing 20, is a pressure packed container 22 filled with a semi-liquid shoe polish. The front end of the base plate 10 is provided with two brackets 24 having slots 26 for receiving two lugs 28 extending from the casing 26; the rear end of said casing atent C) being secured to the base plate by means of two thumb screws 30. A buffing cloth 32 made of a fabric or lambs wool or other suitable material is extended over the casing 20 and is secured by means of eyelets 34, these eyelets being so arranged that they will hold the buffing cloth in position when they are attached to pins 36 extending from the casing.
A cover 46 is provided with openings at opposite ends, said openings being generally parallel to the polish container 22 and in alignment with each other; the forward opening journals on the protruding circumference of a bracket 38 extending upwardly from the front end of the base plate 10, and the opening in the rear of the cover 46 is rotatably secured to the base plate by means of a pivot 52 which engages a bracket 42 extending upwardly from the rear end of the base plate 10, said pivot being provided with a knob 54 on the exterior of the cover for conveniently rotating the base plate, and a non-circular connection 62 for slidably but not rotatably engaging the non-circular opening in the bracket 42, a pin 56 project:
ing with both ends through the pivot 52, said pin being I located between the cover 46 and the bracket 42, a slot 58 on the interior of the cover 10 for receiving said pin, a coil spring 60 encircling the pivot 52 and bearing against the knob 54 and the cover 10, normally keeping the pin 56 engaged in the slot 58 and thereby releasably locking the base plate with the cover.
. A nozzle 64 extends from the pressure packed container 22 and protrudes through an opening in the bracket 38 to the exterior of the cover 10, said nozzle being the conventional type used with pressure packed containers,
7 is connected with a valve 66 on the inside of the container;
when said nozzle is tilted in any direction the valve opens and releases the contents of the container. A lever 68 which is hinged by a pin 70 to a bracket 72 extending from the top interior of the cover 10, contacts with one end the nozzle 64 and is provided with a button 74 at the other end, said button protruding through an opening to the exterior of the cover 46; the tension of a spring 76, disposed on the pin 70, holds the lever 68 in normal position clear of the nozzle.
When the manipulator wishes toemploy the polishing device. he holds the handle shaped cover 10 in his hand, with the brush 16 exposed, and then brushes the dust and dirt from the shoe; he then directs the nozzle 64 to the tip of the shoe, presses the button 74- and dispenses the desired amount of shoe polish onto the shoe, distributes the polish with the dauber brush 12 all over the shoe and then utilizes the brush 16 for shining the shoe. Next he pushes the knob 54 inwardly and rotates it thereby reversing the base plate 10 and exposing the bufiing cloth 32 which he utilizes to put a final gloss to the shoe.
When the polish in the container becomes exhausted, a new container may be easily substituted by removing the thumb screws 30 and removing the casing 20.
From the foregoing, the manner of constructing and operating the device, together with its numerous advantages, will be readily understood and further explanation is believed to be unnecessary. However, since numerous changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art after consideration of the foregoing specifications and accompanying drawings, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction shown and described, but all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus disclosed and described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a shoe polishing device, an elongate base plate having two faces and ends, a polishing brush on one face of said base plate, a pressure container of shoe polish mounted on the other face of said base plate, a
cover defining a cavity to selectively accommodate said container and said brush, said cover having opposed end Walls, means establishing an axis of rotation for said base plate and including a pivot at one end of said base plate and mounted in one of said end walls, a nozzle forming a part of said pressure container, the other of said end walls having an aperture in which said nozzle is disposed, said nozzle and said pivot being coaxial.
2. In a shoe polishing device, an elongate base plate having two faces and ends, a polishing brush on one face of said base plate, a pressure container of shoe polish mounted on the other face of said base plate, a cover defining a cavity to selectively accommodate said container and said brush, said cover having opposed end walls, means establishing an axis of rotation for said base plate and including a pivot at one end of said base plate and mounted in one of said end walls, a nozzle forming a part of said pressure container, the other of said end Walls having an aperture in which said nozzle is disposed, said nozzle and said pivot being coaxial, a shoe polish dauber on the same face of said base plate as said polishing brush, said pressure container having a valve which is opened in response to deflection of said nozzle, and means carried by said cover for deflecting said nozzle.
3. The device of claim 2 wherein there is a polishing cloth, and means attaching said polishing cloth'to said base plate and positioning the polishing cloth on the same face thereof as said container.
4. The device of claim 2 wherein there is a polishing cloth, and means attaching said polishing cloth to said base plate and positioning the polishing cloth on the same face thereof as said container, and in a position over said container, a bearing at the end of said plate having said nozzle, one of said cover end walls having an aperture with said bearing located therein, and said nozzle extending through said bearing and having a portion protruding beyond said cover for direct application of shoe polish onto a shoe.
5. A shoe polishing device comprising a handle having opposed end walls, an elongate base plate having opposite faces, a container having shoe polish under pressure, means securing said container on one face of said base plate, an elongate nozzle constituting a part of said container and projecting therefrom and through which the shoe polish is adapted to issue, a brush on the other face of said base plate, means mounting said base plate for rotation between said end walls of said handle and including a portion of said nozzle and a pivot, said portion of said nozzle located at one end of said base plate and said pivot located at the opposite end of said base plate, said portion of said nozzle and said pivot having coaxial longitudinal axes to establish an axis of rotation for said base plate.

A shoe polishing device comprising a handle having opposed end walls, an elongate base plate having opposite faces, a container having shoe polish under pressure, means securing said container on one face of said base plate, an elongate nozzle constituting a part of said container and projecting therefrom and through which the shoe polish is adapted to issue, a brush on the other face of said base plate, means mounting said base plate for rotation between said end Walls of said handle and including a portion of said nozzle and a pivot, said portion of said nozzle located at one end of said base plate and said pivot located at the opposite end of said base plate, said portion of said nozzle and said pivot having coaxial longitudinal axes to establish an axis of rotation for said base plate, said container further including a valve structure which is opened in response to deflection of said nozzle, and means carried by said handle and engageable With said nozzle for deflecting said nozzle with reference to the container to open said valve structure.
