To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM CHARLES HENRY POLDEN HEDGECOOK and FLORENCE AMY HEDGECOCK, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Brighton, in the county of Sussex, England, have invented Improvements in or Relating to Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to provide improved means for increasing the hold of a shoe upon the foot above the heel for the purpose of preventing the shoe slipping up and down on the heel and causing discomfort and rapid wear of the foot covering and lining of the shoe.

To this end the improved holding device comprises a length of rubber tubing incased in velvet or other suitable material having an edge portion or portions adapted to be sewn or otherwise attached to and around the top inside edge portion of the heel of the shoe.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved holding de vice alone. Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a shoe with the improved holding device applied thereto. Figs. 4 and 5 are cross sections of modified forms of holding devices.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the rubber tube a of the holding device is laid upon a strip 6 of velvet, chamois leather, or other suitable fabric or material (hereinafter referred to generally as covering material) but preferably having a soft nature like velvet or chamois leather, which is then doubled or folded around the tube as shown and the two layers of material stitched, as at 6 or otherwise secured together to hold the rubber tube in place and leave a flange portion a for attachment to the shoe. The length of the rubber tube a and its covering 6 is such as to extend well around the heel portion (Z of the shoe as shown. In Fig. 3 the attachment of the holding device to the shoe is shown as effected by stitching at e. The two thicknesses of material forming the flange portion 0 may be caused to adhere to one another by adhesive material. The free edge of the flange portion 0 may also be caused inner surface or'lining of the heel portion (Z of the shoe so as to remain closely against the same and form a smooth surface there with and present a neat appearance. In Fig. 4 the rubber tube a is drawn into a tubular or pocket portion f that is woven or otherwise formed at the edge of a strip f of textile material or fabric.

In Fig. 5 the covering material 6 is doubled or folded around the tube a and stitched as at 6 b in such a manner, as shown, as to form opposite flanges g, g for attachment to the shoe above and below the tubular cushioning portion of the device formed by the covered tube a. The tubing a may be by adhesive material to closely adhere to the hermetically closed at its ends and be wholly ginal holding device comprising a length of rubber tubing and covering material incasing said tubing and having upper and lower marginal portions for attachment around the tolp inside edge portion of the shoe heel.

5. In a shoe, means for holding the shoe firmly upon the foot, comprising a length of rubber tubing and covering material inclosing said tubing and having a marginal flange for attachment to the shoe.

6. In a shoe, means for holding the shoe firmly upon the foot, comprising .a length of rubber tubing and a strip of covering material doubled over said tubing and stitched to leave marginal material for attachment tothe shoe.

7. In a shoe, means for holding the shoe firmly upon the foot, comprising a length of rubber tubing and covering material inolosing said tubing and having marginal flanges for attachment to the shoe.

8. As a new article of manufacture, means for holding a shoe firmly upon the foot comprising a length of rubber tubing sufficient to extend around the top inside edge portion of a shoe heel and covering material inclosing said tubing and having a marginal flange for attachment to a shoe heel.

9. As a new article of manufacture, means for holding a shoe firmly upon the foot comprising a length of rubber tubing suiiicient to extend around the vtop inside edge portion of January, 1915.
