Be it known that I, FLORENCE L. CADE- NAs, a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Wearing-Apparel, as set forth in the annexed specification and drawing forming a part thereof.

My invention pertains to that class of Wearing apparel particularly applicable for use in bathing,"pa`nd has for its main object to rovide a combined shoe and stocking an means whereby both may properly be held in place upon the wearer.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe, stocking and garter comprehending my invention. Fig. 2 is a sect-ion of the shoe and stocking shown in Fig. 1 taken on the line A--B, one part of said section having its members separated for sake of clearness as will be explained. Fig.

3 is a perspective of the garter employed in the embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detailed section showing, parts of my invention illustrated more fully in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a partial side elevation of a portion of the shoe shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 1, 1 represents the stocking portion of my invention, preferably made of stoekinet, jersey or some quite elastic material adapted to readily conform to the figure of the wearer. 2 represents the shoe portion and 3 the garter porit-ion of my invention. The shoe portion' is preferably provided with a sole 4, shown in section of' Figs. 2 and 4, made Iof cork, linoleum or other suitable waterproof, nonabsorbing substance covered by layers of canvas or other suitable material upon opposite sides thereof, as indicated at 5 and 6. These layers have projecting edges 7 and 8, and in the manufacture of my invention I preferably make the stocking portion with a foot without a sole and bend the bottom of the foot portion over the extended portions 7 and 8, as indicated at 9 in Fig. 4, and then stitch through all four layers thus arranged, as indicated in the said figure. I then draw the foot portion 2 into approximately the shape that the same assumes when upon the wearer, as shown in section in Fig. 2, the right-hand side of which shows the members 7, 8,. and 9 stitched together, and the left-hand side of which shows them in approximately their relative positions but open for sake of clearness. The shoe portion 2 comprises the vamp 10 which preferably is made as shown in section in Fig. 2 and doubled as indicated at 11. This doubled portion 11 is placed against the members 7, 8 and 9 as indicated on the righthand side of Fig. 2 and then stitched into the same, as shown by the stitches 12 in Figs. 2 and 5. The vamp or portion 10 is preferably p-rovided at its upper edge with a tape bent over and stitched into the same, as indicated at 13, and the vamp is also provided with eyelets 14. for the reception of the tape or ribbon 15, which is laced through the eyelets and then passed through the loop 16 attached to the heel portion of the vamp and then tied around the ankle, as indicated at 17 i to assist in securely holding the shoe portion in place. The vamp or portion 10 may either be stitched to the stocking portion on the line E-F in Fig. 2 below the eyelets, so as to allow the insertion of the braid or lace 15, or the vamp may be stitched through the tape 13 on the line C-P of Fig. 2 between the eyelets and the stitching at the eyelets .carried down below the same, as indicated at 18 in Fig. 5. The upper extremity of the stocking portion 1 is preferably provided with a deep hem extending from 19 to 20 with a line of stitches 21 taken therethrough so as to define at some distance from the top of the stocking, as between the bottom of the hem 19 and the stitches 21, a channel through which the garter 3 is threaded as by inserting the same in "the opening 22. The garter 3 is provided preferably with metallic eyes 23 united as by a ribbon or tape 24 in such manner as to make the same adjustable.

- The operation of my invention is substantially as follows: If my improvement in wearing apparel be placed upon the wearer as indicated in Fig. 1 and the garter 3 properly adjusted as by means of the adjusting

device

23, 24, the garter will hold the stooking and shoe portion in proper position upon the wearer, and the tape or lace 15, while adding to the ornamentation of the foot portion, will assist in holding the shoe portion properly upon the foot and by coperation with the loop 16 hold the heel portion in proper position and prevent the same from working upon the heel. When desired to remove my improved article of wearing apparel the same may be accomlll@ plished by merely unfasteningthe lace 15 and stretching the garter in such manner as to open the same so that the entire stocking portion may readily be drawn over the limb of the wearer and then the entire article may be removed in the same manner that an ordinary stocking is usually removed.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that I have produced as a single article a combined shoe, stocking and garter, the parts of which cooperate to form a unitary piece of wearing apparel, and which when worn or removed preserve their proper relationship. Also my invention while in use presents an artistic appearance and possesses utility not common to the separate parts when worn in the usual way and-after use in bathing is readily dried as a single article without the disadvantages of unattached and separate members.

I do not wish to limit myself to the eXact detailsl of construction or assemblage of the vparts shown in the accompanying drawing and described in this specification to illustrate my invention, for it will be obvious that considerable departure may be made in the way of details withoutV departing from the spirit and scope of 'my invention which is as set forth in the following claims l. As a new article of manufacture, an elastic leg-covering having an inelastic solecovering permanently secured thereto, and

also having securing means' at the top and bottom of the leg-portion.

2. As an article of manufacture, a1eg-cov. ering having a sole-covering permanently secured'thereto, the two portions being composed of different kinds 4of material, and means at the top and bottomof the legportion for securing the samev upon the wearer.

3. As an article of manufacture, a leg-covering having a sole-covering attached thereto, and having means for securing the same upon the wearer, and means for preventing the sole-covering from slipping relatively to the foot of the wearer.-

et. As an article of manufacture, a legcovering having a sole-covering secured thereto, and also having means for securing the same to the wearer, and a vamp secured to the lower end of the leg-covering to reinforce the same.

' 5. As an article of manufacture, a bathing-garment comprising a stocking havinga sole of waterproof material secured thereto, and a reinforcing vamp secured to the sole and stocking at the juncture of thelatter two parts, and means for securing the garment to the wearer.
