SNAP-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY Gr. WERNI- MONT, a citizen of the United States, res ding at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to snap hooks, and it more particularly relates to an improved form of springless snap hook.
An object of the invention is to provide a snap hook of this character which is particularly applicable to halters, hitching straps, check reins and other articles of harness.
Another object of the invention is to provide a snap hook of this character wh ch is of maximum strength, durability, holding eiiiciency and convenience, consistent with neatness, lightness, simplicity, compactness and economy of construction.
Other objects and advantages may be recited hereinafter and in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which supplement this specification, Figure 1 1s a perspective View of the complete device which constitutes one form of my inventlon. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of one of the elements of the device. Fig. 3 is a SlIIlllar view of the other element of the device. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device illustrated in Flg. 1. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view therethrough.
In these drawings, in which similar reference characters correspond with similar parts, throughout the several views, the device essentially consists of a major element 10 and a minor element 11. The major element is formed from sheet metal and is provided with a hook 12 which is reinforced by means of side flanges or beads 13 which are formed by turning the opposite edges of the metal inward and folding them upon the medial portion of the strip or extension from which the hook is formed. The end of the hook extends back in the direction of the opposite end of the member 10, for a purpose hereinafter shown.
The end of the member 10 opposite to the hook 12 is provided with an apertured flange 14, extending at right angles to the main portlon of said member, in the opposite direction from that in which the hook is curved. The aperture in the flange 14 is elongated, or constitutes a slot 15 through which the strap 16 extends, as illustrated in Fig. l. The flange 14 is provided with a horizontal extension 17 which extends at right angles to the portion 14, or on a plane parallel with the plane of the plate 10. This plate is provided with a transverse slot 18 through which extends a tongue 19, formed on a flange 20, which extends at right angles to the body of the plate 11. This plate is apertured for the reception of rivets 21, whereby the strap 16 is secured to said plate 11. The plate 11 is provided with stop lugs 22 which are normally in contact with the flange 14,so that when a pull is exerted on the strap 16, the said pull exerts a pressure against the flange 14 as well as the flange 20, so as to relieve the latter from undue strain. The tongue 19 is curved and ex tended at such an angle to the body of the plate 11, when said plate is in its normal parallel relation with the plate 10, that it meets with the free end of the hook 12, and combines therewith to form a closed loop, from which it is impossible to detach a ring or the like, without destroying this relation of the hook 12 and tongue 19. However, the slot 18 is made sufficiently large to allow free play of the tongue 19 therein, so that said tongue may be swung upward, by moving the other end of the plate 11 downward, and this may be done only by bending the strap 16 where it passes through the slot 15 and pushing a portion of it through said slot, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The plate 10 is provided with flanges 23 which extend longitudinally thereof, on opposite sides of and at right angles to the main portion of the plate 10, and serve to stiffen and strengthen said plate, and coact therewith and with the plate 11 to form a housing for the end of the strap 16, so that the harness oil or other preservative material on the anchored end of the strap is not disturbed, and so, the strap is well preserved at this end where it is necessarily weakened by the rivet holes therethrough.
It will be seen that I have provided a de vice of this character which is fully capable of attaining the foregoing objects, in a thoroughly practical and efficient manner.

A springless snap, consisting of a plate and having a tongue extending from one end thereof, lugs laterally projecting from opposite side edges of the plate and adjacentjthe other end thereof, a second plate having a slotted flangeiextending at right angles from one end thereof, a hook extending from theopposite end of the plate, said second plate havin a second slot between i the hook and said first mentioned slot, said first mentioned slot adapted to have an end of the flexible member extended therethrough and secured to the first mentioned plate, downwardly extending flanges provided on the side edges of said second plate and adapted to engage the sides of said flexible member, said lugs of said first mentioned plate adapted to lie between and abut against said longitudinal flanges and said slotted flange, said tongue extending through said second slot into contiguity with said hook.

said plate being provided on its sides adjacent its other end with laterally extending slits, downwardly projecting flanges formed by the side edges of said second plate between said slitted portion and said hook, a second flange provided on the opposite end of said second plate and extending downwardly at right angles thereto, and being provided with a transversely extending slot therein, said flexible member adapted to extend through said transverse slot said tongue adapted to extend through said first slot into contiguity with said hook and saidlugs adapted to be housed between thesecond flange and the ends of the side flanges on the second plate when the tongue is in engagement with said hook. v
