Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 29, 1913. Serial No. 787,278.
To all 'witam 'it may oonoern: i
Be it known that I, THOMAS MARKI-MM, a subject of the King of England, residing at Belfast, in Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Doors, Windows, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for doors, windows and the like of'the type which permit the door to be locked in itsl closed position or held when opened, and the invention consists in a novel form of bolt comprising two pivoted parts, working in a casing having three cross slots, into one of which the handle of the bolt engages when the door is locked, into another of which it engages when the door is unlocked, and into the third of which it engages when it is desired to hold the dooi` either in partly or fully opened position, the bolt being provided with a notch end which engages slotted keepers or equivalents for the two latter purposes.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the bolt; and
Fig. 2 a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is an ele-V vation of the bolt, casing and keeper, and Fig. a plan view of Flg. 8. Fig. 5 is a plan showing a door fully open in full lines and held partly open in broken lines. Figs. 6 and 7 are views at right angles to one another of a keeper for use in holding the door fully open. i
. In said drawings a designates a door frame and t the door hung thereon. VMounted on lthe door is the casing f provided with three cross slots g, h and j and a longitudinal slot 72 and slidable within said casing is the bolt formed of two .parts a and b hinged together near the inner end at o and provided with va handle or equivalent d. The outer end of said bolt'isprovided with notches e 'of which two are shown, but one or any other number of said notches may be provided.
Secured to the door frame u is a keeper Z for reception of the bolt, this keeper having an angular projection m provided with a hole n with which communicates a slot p, and to a wall or other fiXed support there is attached a keeper g provided with a hole s communicating with a slot r. The slots z) and-1' may be slightly tapered as shown.
The action of the fastening is as follows When the bolt is completely withdrawn the shank vof handle d lies in the slot j of the casing f andL when the bolt is shot into the keepe'r Z to lock the door the shank lies in the slot h (Figs. 3 and 4), these movements or Operations being as usual. `W hen however lit is desired to hold the door partly open, as
shown in broken lines in Fig. 5, the bolt is shot fully forward in the casing, the shank traversing the longitudinal slot .78 and entering the cross slot g. rJl`his brings the pivot 0 of the bolt beyond the end of the casing and the forward end of the portion a of the bolt is passed into hole n in projection m, one of the notches e therein then engaging the slot p. Again, when it is dcsired to hold the door fully open, as shown in full lines in Fig. 5, the outer end of portion a of the bolt is passed into hole 8 in keeper g and a notch e of the bolt will engage the slot 7*. The device is equally applicable for right or left hand use.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A fastening for doors, windows and the like adapted for holding same in three positions, comprising a casing adapted to be secured to the door, a bolt within said casing formed of two members hinged together and capable of movement in said casing into two positions with its members in alineinent and into a third position with one of its members angularly disposed, and keep'ers adapted tc be secured to the door frame and a fiXed object with which said last mentioned member engages for the purpose of holding the door partly and fully opened respectively.
2. A fastening for doors, windows and the like, comprising a casing adapted to be secured to the door, a bolt within said casing formed of two parts hinged together and its outer end provided with notches, an operating member at the inner end of said bolt, said casing having three cross slots and a longitudinal slot connecting same for reception of said Operating member, a keeper adapted to be secured to the door or window frame and having a slotted aperture adapted to be engaged by the notched end of the bolt to hold the door or window in partly opened position and a second leeper adapted to be secured to a fixed object and having a slotted aperture adapted to be engaged by the notched end of the'bolt to hold the door Vor window in fully opened position substantially as described.
3. A looking device for doors, Windows and the like including a vcasing adapted to be secured to the door, said casing being formed With a longitudinal slot and transverse slots which intersect the longitudin'al slot and which are dis osed in spaced relation throughont the ength of the casing, a bolt consisting of hingedly connected Sections re-V ceivable as an entirety Within-the oasing, the
Sections being maintained in axial alinement lthrough contact with the casmg,` means for looking the bolt againstA movelnent With respect to the'casng Whereby bothV Sections are housed Within thecasing, means for looking one section of the bolt ,With respect to the casing whereby the other section may move on itshinge connection zind'means'zidapted to' be carried by the door frame andengageable by the movable section of the bolt.
In Witness Whereof VI have vsigned this specification in the presenee of two Witnesses.
