Specification of Letters Patent.

Application iled'January 27, 1915. Serial No. 4,8%.
To all whom it may concern.' l
Be it known-that l, FLOYD R; Hikr's, a citizen of the United States of America; `and resident of Fort Wayne, in the countyuo Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Push-Brooms, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in push brooms of that class having a detachable handle, and especially thus arranged for screwing the handle into the broom from opposite sides thereof.
The object of the invention is to provide l5 a brace to be used in conjunction with a shoulder on the handle and securing means on the broom-back by means of which the handle and broom are held rigidly together. The object of the invention contemplates also such construction that the handle may be shifted from one side of the broom to the other and the brace applied in either position.
The above objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which z--Figure l is a side elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a detail isometric View of the device from the Y front thereof. v Similar characters of reference indicate" corresponding parts in both views and re* ferring now to the same: (A) is the back of the broom proper of the ordinary type having screw-threaded openings (B) for the reception of the threaded end (C) of the broom-handle (D). In the broom-back (A) upon eitherlside of its middle portion is an upwardly projecting screw-head (E) adapted to engage the corres ending end of 40 a brace (F). The brace (FI) consists of a tgl-shaped iron formed with outwardly tiaring feet (G) in each of which is made an opening (H) the shape of a key-hole. rhe iarge portionA of the opening being of. e5 sufficient dimensions as to admitthe passage therethrough of the screw-head (E). The handle i) has an enlargement or shoulder (J) and a shank (K) with the screw-threaded` endH (C) that engages in one or the otherV 'of the'threaded openings (B) in the broom-back. `The shank is introduced through the upper endv of the brace (F) and the perforated feet of the brace are engaged with the screw heads (E), so that when the vhandle is secured. into thefba'ck of the brush the shoulder (J) will press against the brace so as to clamp the -latter into rigid anchorage with the screws (E).-L
Thus the handle is held in fixed position" relative to the broom. Should it-be desired to insert the handle in the opening (B) in the opposite side of the broom, it is only necessary to unscrew the handle and reverse the position ofthe brace, and placing the feet into engagement with the screws as before. The handle may then be inserted through the brace and screwed into its connection as in the former case.
With the construction shown the broom' proper is prevented from becoming loose upon the handle asoften occurs-'Where no brace is used. Deterioration'bt the threaded connection between the handle and broom because of wabbling of the broom proper is also obviated.
It is of common occurrence Wherev no brace is'used between the handle andfbroom for the threaded end oit' the handle'f'fo'br/eak,l off in the socket when one end of the broom v is shoved into sharp Contact withlan obstruction, while in. the present construction the strain is thrown onto the handle at a point suliciently distant from the juncture of the handle and broom as toprevent breakage.'
What l claim istl. In a broonhaving a detachable handle, a broom proper, e. handle having 'a shoulder and a screw-threaded connection with the broom proper; a brace adapted to be engaged by the shoulder of the handle and having feet ladapted to engage the vback of the broom proper; a'nd means for securing said -feet to said back.
2. In" a device of the class described a broom proper; a handle having screwthreaded connection with thebro'om proper and having a shoulder thereon; and a brace removably connected to the broom proper and bearing against the shoulder of the handle.
In testimony whereof l aiiix my signa-l,
ture, in presence of two witnesses.
