To all whom z't'may concern:
Be it known that we, PAUL H. VonLKnR and KARL KIMMIGH, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bedstead, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a bed contractible lengthwise to accommodate variations in the rooms in which the bed is placed, and to provide for variations in the bed in correspondence with the service to which it is put.
Drawz'ngs:-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bedstead constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same shown in full lines as contracted, and in dotted lines as extended. Fig. 3 is a detail view in section showing the construction and arrangement of the parts of the bedstead where the same are operatively connected. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a bedstead constructed and arranged according to the present invention, shown in its fully collapsed disposition. Fig. 5 is a section taken as on the line 5 5 in Fig. 4, the drawing being shown on a relatively enlarged scale. Fig. 6 is a detail view in perspective showing the hinge plate for pivotally connecting the side bars of the bedstead, the sections of the side bar being shown in the position of swinging each upon the other, as when the bedstead is being folded. Fig. 7 isa side view of the parts shown in Fig. 6 disposed in rigid alinement.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the head frame 12 and the foot frame 13 have each a connective structure 14 uniting the posts of the said head and foot frames. Extending from each of the said posts and oppositely disposed in relation to the paired arrangement thereof are short rigid side bar sections 15 and 16. The sections 15 are relatively longer than the sections 16 and are disposed on their respective head and foot frames in relatively opposite position, being thus arranged to overlap in the folded or contracted position of the parts as seen best in Fig. 4 of the drawings. To the section 16 are pivotally connected the swinging side bar sections 17. The pivots of these connections are formed by bolts 18. Sections 15 Specification of Letters Patent.

are pivotally connected by bolts 19 to the side bar sections 20. The sections 20 are each provided with a slide plate 21. The plates 21 are each hinged by means of the hinge pins 22 with the sections 20.
As best shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the plates 21 have overturned edges 23 which unfold in sliding relation to the edges of the sections 17. The sections 17 are each provided with overturned tabs 24 extended in the path of the edges 23 to form stop niembers preventing accidental or unintentional separation of the sections 17 and 20 when the bedstead is conventionally extended. The sections 17 and 20 are preferably constructed from wrought angle iron. The sections 20 are further provided to form a runway and brace for the section 17, with the short bench 25.
As shown best in Fig. 7 of the drawings, when the sections 17 and 20 are telescoped, the end of the section 17 passes beyond the bench 25 which in this position serves to reinforce the structure at the point of junction. As shown in this ligure and in Fig. 6, the sections 17 are each provided with a single perforation 26 while the sections 20 are provided with a series of perforations 27. Vhen it is desired to reduce the length of the side bars of the bed, the sections 17 and 20 are alined and the relatively telescoping section 17 sliding between the horizontal flange of the section 2O and the bench 25 mounted thereon. The perforation 26 is arrested in register with one or the other of the perforations 27, and the bolt 28 is passed through the alined perforations and there held by a pin 29, or other suitable device. In this position it will be seen the side bars of the bed are rigid, to remain so until the pins 29 having been removed, the bolts 28 are withdrawn from engagement with the sections 17 and 20 permitting the same to slide with relation each to the other. When the bedstead is to be collapsed, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the sections 17 and 20 are drawn to the full limit of their relative movement and until the tabs 24 on the section 17 engage the edges 23 of the plates 21. The sections forming the side bars of the bed are then in position to swing on the hinge pins 22.
In thisv connection it will be seen, and by reference to Fig. 4 of the drawings, why the relatively elongated section 15 connected with the lhead frame, is on onesiderof the bed structure, while the corresponding section 15 on the foot frame is on the Opposite side. The folded sections 17 and 20 aline in parallel relation to each other and to the connective structure 1l of the bedstead. In this condition it is obvious the bedstead may be conveniently moved or stored. The frames 12 and 13 are provided each with a cross-bar 30, Which reinforces the head and foot frame structures.

' When in the course of operation it is desired to pack or store the bedstead and bed spring, the tube sections 35 and 36 may be separated by manipulating the sleeves Ll1 in the manner above described, to permit the release of the spiral springs 33 from the wire pallet. The pallet is then rolled or otherwise stowed and the tubes 35 are lifted out of tube sections 36. lIt is obvious that when thus arranged the-space consumed by the bed springs in transshipment or in storage is materially decreased.
Claim:
The combination of a head franie; a foot frame; and a plurality of side bars connecting said frames, comprising a plurality of Yhalf-length side bar sections, one of saidlsections on each side Vof? the structure having a slide plate pivotally connected therewith and slidinglveng'aging the opposite side bar section; and ineans for rigidly connecting said side bar sections in adjusted position.
